  • VP Debate Debrief

I have to say, I’ve never really watched an entire debate. Let’s look back and see why:

    2004: GWB vs. Kerry
–I’m not sure why not. I was in San Diego. I DO remember Will Forte as GWB on SNL–and although we missed Will Ferrell as GWB, Forte did a good job.

    2000: GWB vs. Al Gore
–I was in college. Didn’t really have a TV or time to watch one…enough said.

1996: Clinton vs. Someone (can’t remember OH…Bob Dole)
–I was in high school and too young to vote or care.

So all of that to say that I WAS PRETTY SURPRISED AT the way tonight’s debate went down.

    Biden vs. Palin

    And

    IT WAS SOOOOOOOOOO AWKWARD!

Why didn’t anyone tell me these things are so hard to watch? It was like watching The Break Up (a Vince Vaughn movie with that girl from Friends that was marketed as a comedy but was totally depressing).

I could barely stomach it. I mean, two people up there, fighting…saying things strongly…it was weird.

  • I’m sorry.  I should have warned you: Debates ARE difficult to watch.  They’re very…tense.  Now you know.  In the future, watch with caution.

I must say, I’m surprised tonight was your first debate.  You should have started with last week’s debate – tonight’s wasn’t a “normal” debate in the sense that they were trying to debate for themselves AND on someone else’s behalf.

I personally felt like tonight’s debate said that Biden was running against McCain.  McCain’s name got mentioned A LOT more than Obamas…not that I’m complaining about it!

  • Jennifer Aniston.

    I hate politics.

  • @marshallismyalias - oh geez. I KNEW it was Jennifer Aniston…

  • I wanted to watch the debates last week and tonight.  I completely forgot about both of them.  I believe I watched part of the 2004 debate (one of my roommates was a very passionate Poli Sci major and is now volunteering for Obama’s campaign in Denver), and the 2000 debate was an assignment for my high school civics class.  I find them boring to be honest. I don’t get politics- they all make everything sound like the right choice!

  • Umm… I don’t think I’ve ever not watched a presidential debate, at least since pre-1988.

  • I knew you knew. It just needed to be said.

  • You’re a better American that I am!!  I didn’t EVEN attempt to watch… I was at Disneyland getting soaked on Grizzly Rapids or whatever that thing is called!

  • I like debates.  They’re uncomfortable, but the candidates basically tell you how they’re different.  They’re briefed like crazy beforehand, so you know a lot of their answers are canned, but once in a while a discussion goes a bit off the intended path, and you get to see the candidates in their element.  Plus, I kinda like conflict.  Debates help show how they respond when someone gets on their nerves.  I find it fascinating, and a great tool to get past the rhetoric.  Of course, then the media spins everything and tries to patch the holes with more rhetoric, but… they can’t erase what was said.  It’s like the Janet Jackson Super Bowl show.  What happened happened, and if you were unlucky enough to see it, no amount of words will cleanse the image from your mind.

You should go back and watch the first debate.  It was good.  If you can’t find it online, email me.

  • it’s because we don’t like confrontation…

  • I like watching the debates when I can catch them.  Confrontation is fine as long as I personally am not involved.
