  • Strike, part 2

From a post on the United Hollywood blog:

LA City Council: Where’s the AMPTP?

    At
today’s Los Angeles City Council meeting, over 300 writers and
supporters came to hear Councilmember Eric Garcetti speak to the City
Council about the writers strike, and the need to bring the AMPTP back
to the table so negotiations can resume.

    The AMPTP did not
bother to send a representative, apparently feeling that the $20
million a day damage to the Los Angeles economy is more the City
    Council’s problem than theirs.

    OUCH.

Come on people–let’s end this. Everyone is hurting for it, and you media moguls–you KNOW you don’t need the money.
    Greed…ugh.

    Side note:
We saw I AM LEGEND last night and loved it. I absolutely loved it. What a fantastic story–and for all the previews and trailers I saw for it, I never really knew what the movie was going to be about–and I liked feeling that way. Usually I am prepared to enjoy a movie before I go see it (due to the massive marketing combined with the research I do). This was refreshingly surprising.

  • Greed on both sides of the aisle, buddy. Last time I checked there were some ultra-rich writers out there too.

  • like 5% of the writers are rich man–the rest are not or anywhere close. Not to mention that the strike is not just affecting the writers but also all of the other employees that have lost their jobs while production on all of the non-reality TV shows are shut down. The average writer makes a lot less than you think they do IF and WHEN they are actually employed. You should do better research before blasting my blog.

  • We saw I Am Legend for our anniversary on Monday, and I was okay with it, but my husband just couldn’t take the disturbing scene involving dogs.  He had to leave the theater for awhile.

  • Yeah, I wasn’t blasting your blog. Just offering another viewpoint. How is that blasting anything?

And the people shutting down the shows are the people on strike, not the producers. So maybe the writers should re-think the effects of their actions? Or is it okay if the writers cause it, but if the producers cause it it’s not?

I have some sympathy for the writers. But I refuse to believe that this is purely a matter of producer/studio greed. There are people at fault on both sides.

  • I think you should read about it some more.

  • A group of us are going to see I Am Legend on Saturday morning.  I hope I like it as much as you; I don’t want anything disgusting to ruin the rest of my day (per Sawatdeeka’s comment)!

  • You just have to be willing to close your eyes a bit, like when it gets really quiet…that’s a good time to assume something might jump out at you.  I enjoyed it but it was kind of disturbing–loved the movie, though.  I did close my eyes on gross parts, though.

  • Oh, and I’m with the writers on this, it’s obvious-MIke!

  • THANK YOU DEAR!!

Mike. I don’t comment on politic-type things that I don’t know about because I realize that I don’t do as much research or know as much overall about the topic. You should check out the specifics of what the writers are asking for and what the AMPTP is refusing to give up. It’s completely ridiculous.

  • I don’t think it’s obvious. I think it’s complex and there are arguments to be made on both sides.

  • I’m not blaming the media moguls for the strike. However, I am blaming them for REFUSING to be at the bargaining table. There’s a difference. They won’t come back to the table. Herein lies the problem.

  • If you liked this movie you should rent The Omega Man with Charlton Heston.  I Am Legend and The Omega Man are both based on the same book.  And although The Omega Man is “dated” in a lot of ways.  I think it’s from the early 70′s I appreciated the storyline more than this remake.  Check it out if you can find it anywhere and let me know what you think.

  • I saw I am Legend a few days ago and also loved it. I must confess, though, that I spent a good part of the movie stamding, peeking aound the side wall and jumping up and down. I could hardly watch it at times because of the things jumping out.

  • I actually punched myself in the nose once because I tried to cover my eyes to fast….sad.

  • Dont get so worked up aboutr not being able to watch new shows man.  Writers can still write, They should just write up individual contracts.  Amyway most of them just write Junk thats bad for humanity anyway.  And the Moguls just produce it for the masses.  They should all be broke. Amy and recently discovered that we dont really need the tv.  so we never got it turned on in our new house.  Amazing how productive we have become. And better aquainted.

  • ^^Good words my bro…you are a wise old man.
    HAHAHAHAaaa…

  • although, the 20 millions dollars a day revenue that’s being lost for those families of crew, etc…is a sad thing. Those dudes are the ones really suffering right now. The guys that make an average salary wrapping cables and operating the boom mics–those are the ones suffering.

  • Christy punched herself in the face trying to cover her eyes… oh man, that’s a little funny.

  • It really is. But it wasn’t that scary…

  • I agree with you totally.  I’ve also been hearing the Legend is really good.  I’ll have to make time this weekend or in the next coming days to gosee it.  Wishing you and yours a very merry Christmas and a blessed, prosperous new year.
