EDIT ADD:
Memorable quotes from vacation: Day 1 (and the day's not over yet)
"I always do my exercises while watching 'Walker, Texas Ranger'" --My mom, about her daily exercise routine. There's nothing like some Chuck Norris in the mornin'...
"I'M ON VACATION! I don't have to touch anyone else's urine but my own for the next two weeks!!" --My sister (she works at a hospital).
priceless.
I can't wait to see what Day 2 brings...
Twain Harte.
Not much has changed in the past decade or so in this quaint little town.
I went on a run this morning. I decided to take the 3-mile route, not realizing that altitude would be a factor in my ability to intake oxygen and provide my muscles with the proper fuel to actually work like they did on Friday; (needless to say, I had to do some walking.) I took the same trail that everyone takes; the same trail I took growing up. It was on this brisk, August morning that I crossed paths with at least two dozen other walkers/joggers--all of them smiling to say "hello" or "good morning". I barely huffed a reply. It was just to darn early to be nice. Put your smile away! Humph!
Hmmm...people are far nicer up here than in So-Cal.That said, it's such a drastically different culture up here in Nor-Cal than down south. It's very interesting to observe, but I don't feel like talking much more about it right now...
Yesterday was our last Sunday at Christ-First Baptist Church in Covina. It is bitter-sweet to leave. We enjoyed the things we did there, and I know we learned quite a bit from the experience. It certainly gave us another perspective on church ministry and exposed us to a unique atmosphere that taught us a lot about ourselves and the world around us. We are looking forward to Midway this next Sunday!
Speaking of Midway...we still don't know where we're staying this Saturday night. Anyone have any ideas? Once September rolls around we'll be able to use Rose's apartment, but for the next two weekends we need a place to crash. Let me know if you think of anything...

You can stay with Shantelle. Tell her I said it was okay.
The NorCal/SoCal dynamic is certainly worth discussing sometime...
^^It totally is.
Probably depends on where in No. Cal & So. Cal you are. That's been my experience, anyway. I would offer you guys a place to stay, but all we have is a couch & a blow-up mattress.
Daniel,
regarding the Emerging Church...I can see what you are saying about Joel Osteen not really being a part of that, but isn't the Emerging Church, more interested in a "social gospel" than evangelism. Someone sent me the email below (I cut and pasted, sorry, not too savvy in sending it any other way...
Please read and give me your feedback on this. Thanks.
FACTS TO KNOW ABOUT CURRENT TRENDS HAPPENING IN THE NAME OF CHRIST THAT ARE UNDERMINING THE AUTHORITY OF SCRIPTURE AND LEADING TOWARDS
"THE EMERGING CHURCH"
* Scripture is no longer the ultimate authority for many well know leaders of the new evangelicalism.
* The gospel of Jesus Christ is being replaced by humanistic methods that promote church growth and a social gospel.
* There is more and more emphasis on “what’s in it for me” in the “here and now”, and less and less concern regarding the warnings of scripture regarding the imminent return of Jesus and a coming judgment ahead for planet earth.
* More and more Christian leaders are looking for a kingdom of God to be established here on earth by human effort and deny that Jesus Christ will rule and reign in a literal millennial period that is to come.
* Many bridges are being established that lead in the direction of unity with the Roman Catholic Church.
* An experiential mystical form of Christianity is being promoted to attract and reach the postmodern generation called the “Emerging Church.
* We are being told that Christianity needs to be re-invented in order to provide meaning for this generation.
* Christianity is being dumbed-down as the Word of God comes under attack and images and sensual experiences are being promoted as the key to experiencing God. (that is so true of the couple of videos that we have seen at church that come from Rob Bell's ministry)
* In order to re-invent Christianity we are told we need to go back to the past and find out what kinds of experiences were successful to attract people to Christianity. These experiences include icons, candles, incense, liturgy and the sacraments, particularly the sacrament of the Eucharist.
* Many church leaders are beginning to consider that the Reformation went too far. They are reexamining the claims of the “Church fathers” that communion is more than a symbol and for remembrance and that Jesus actually becomes present in the communion wafer.
* There is a growing trend towards an ecumenical unity for the cause of world peace that claims there are many ways to God and that Jesus Christ is not the only way.
Brian McLaren is viewed by many as a key leader of the Emerging Church Movement. The following interviews and the article will explain McLaren's position on "hell" and "homosexuality".

Ooh, interesting stuff- I just skimmed, and could read more later. I still am pretty sure that Joel is in no way affiliated with the emerging whatever. (Although some of those descriptions might also be true of him). He falls into the prosperity gospel section, in my understanding, which doesn't have to do with the emerging church, although again, it may have some of those descriptions in common (reinventing, what's in it for me etc.) Two different things. And, on a skimming level, and without listening to the things at the bottom yet, I would initially say some of the things said are probably true (although possibly misinterpretted) and others are propoganda and not true. Definitely interesting points to ponder and consider as we seek to know the Lord today- I'll read more later.
but isn't the Emerging Church, more interested in a "social gospel" than evangelism.
Isn't the "social gospel" a logical part of evangelism? There's more to evangelizing than handing out Four Spiritual Laws tracts. To truly love someone, as we are to love the lost, should logically require that we care about their well-being here on earth as much as we do their eternal well being. It shouldn't overshadow the sharing of the Word, but it should go hand-in-hand. Christians are, after all, to be known by our love. (1 Cor 13:1-3)
I agree, the two should go hand-in-hand.
Your family sounds hilarious. Heeheehee.
