  • Random Happenings

School at APU is definitely starting. When I pulled into work today a little before 8AM, the freshman were already moving in! Not only were people everywhere, I heard the yells and cheering of all the residence life people, welcoming each car as they pulled up. How fun-AT 8AM!!! Our office was pretty slammed, and will continue to be over the next few weeks. I'll even be working a bit this Saturday while our office is open for a few extra hours.

It's been pretty hot down here lately, and I hear the weekend is supposed to be even hotter. At least it's not as bad as that heatwave we had a while back. That was horrible.

JD and Shannon are coming up tomorrow to see us and Jody...we're pretty excited about getting to hang out with them. Go San Diegans!

We went to see Little Miss Sunshine tonight with some friends. Now, this is not one of those movies Daniel usually goes to see. Like I've said previously, I'm not usually a big fan of the independent film type. I saw Junebug last January because Entertainment Weekly put it on their list of 25 movies to see before the Oscars and I thought it was dreary and abysmal. I was not too opposed however, to seeing this flick because it did have Steve Carell in it--who I love. This was not his typical role, but he was amazing in it. The film itself was also very good. It had a lot of cussing (there's your warning) and wasn't a typical comedy or anything, but it had some very good themes--mostly about community. Community, community, community. Man--there have been so many films about this topic in the past couple of years, and the only thing I can think of is that our culture is very tapped into how much COMMUNITY is a necessity in our lives. We cannot live without it! I've really been giving this some thought, but can't talk too much about it now due to the wheels still turning and all of that...anyways--the film had an incredible ending. It was worth watching the whole film for the last ten minutes. I loved it!

    Also-side story:
You know how there's always those stupid idiot high-schoolers that are coming into the theaters being noisy and a total nuisance? Yeah, it's like every time I go there's some jerks that think the whole world revolves around them and their cell phone...well tonight 4 kids come running into the theater in a very quiet, reflective time in the movie and start being super noisy and running up and down the stairs (stadium seating). Next thing you know, my hero, this big dude in the front starts yelling at them. He got up out of his seat and literally chased them out of the theater, yelling and cussing at them to get out! It was AWESOME!! I actually turned to Christy and said, "That's what I'm talking about", because we ALL don't want to pay ten zillion dollars a ticket to see a movie where kids are being a distraction--kids that aren't in the movie, but are just running about from theater to theatre.  This guy just did what the rest of us wished we could do (profanity aside) and told them to get out!

I actually went up to him after the movie and thanked him. I almost wanted to be his friend and bring him to all the movies I go to from now on...wouldn't that be great?

  • I wish I could've gone.

Theatres should hire "Mystery Viewers" like that big guy. Maybe people who would have trouble keeping other jobs. Or folks from the witness protection plan. Pay 'em a little, let 'em watch free movies, maybe throw in some popcorn, and secretly encourage 'em to intimidate people who 'threaten to compromise the positive moviegoing experience'. Not a bad gig.

  • ^^^That's a fantastic idea.

  • Theatres SHOULD hired mystery viewers like that! That is the COOLEST idea I EVER heard. You should totally write theatres and suggest it. It's the future of movies!!

  • I was very excited to see your review on Little Miss Sunshine, I've wanted to see it, but I've been a bit nervous about going...now you've given me the courage to go! Wow...thanks dsemsen!

And I agree there should be mystery viewers. I'd pay an extra 50 cents for my ticket if movie theatres would hire a mystery viewer!

  • RYC:  No not a picture from Midway.....but so cute, right.  I have a picture of Rachel, sound asleep standing with her head on her bed...looks similar to the one on my site.  I had heard that Little Miss Sunshine was a good movie.  Have a great long weekend Semsen family!

  • I think your "hero" in the theater was my "kingpin" in line at Henry's.

  • Hey, we just got home.  It was fun hanging out with you guys - and thanks for the Nertz lesson.  :o )  Jody's voice rocks - and you did a great job on the transcribing!

P.S. - I want that guy in the movies to be my friend, too.

  • My lil' cousin is one of those Freshmen this year!!  Today she said she's "orientated out" - there's only so many people you can meet the first week of school and actually REMEMBER.

I'm glad you liked the movie - sorry we couldn't join you!!
