  • Ok- two quick things:
One is an article from the LA TImes on the devo book I’m reading that was written by and for APU students. It’s great…another score for APU!! Read the article below since I can’t link you to it…

Devotional Books Written for — and by — Students
An idea that first met resistance, it became an assignment at Azusa Pacific University. The result is a publishing hit with often heart-rending entries.

By K. Connie Kang, Times Staff Writer

NavPress, a major Christian publisher based in Colorado Springs, Colo., had been looking to publish a devotional that would appeal to college students. The idea was for something short and real to inspire the e-mail and iPod generation.

During a brainstorming session 20 months ago, Gabriel Filkey, an executive with TH1NK, NavPress’ brand catering to the 16-to-27 age group, made a suggestion: What if college students were recruited to write the book?

His colleagues did not think college students could deliver book-quality writing. But, Filkey, a 2000 graduate of Azusa Pacific University, the largest Evangelical Christian university on the West Coast, thought otherwise.

He enlisted the help of Judy Hutchinson, the school’s director of the Service Learning Program, which stresses community service. The book project then became a class assignment for 500 undergraduates in more than 20 classes over two semesters. Students — in such varied fields as nursing, journalism, theology, communication and business administration — wrote short spiritual essays for the proposed book.

The first result was “7 Minutes With God,” a devotional written by 32 Azusa Pacific students. The 156-page pocket-size book ($7.99) was released in the summer and now is TH1NK’s top seller.

Last month, NavPress released two more books by 91 more Azusa Pacific students: “7 Minutes With Jesus” and “7 Minutes With the Holy Spirit.”

Voices in the book come across as real — some even gritty. Students talk about faith, loneliness, gratitude, forgiveness and even about their frustration with God when he seems silent.

Emily Radonich, 18, a business administration major, wrote in “7 Minutes with God” that sometimes she feels like yelling at God.

“Sometimes it seems as if God just isn’t there. I feel like David when he cried out to the Lord and he did not answer. I scream at God, ‘Why don’t you answer? Why do I feel so hopeless and alone? How can I understand your plans?’ “

Brian Allan, 19, who does not have a major, wrote in the same book that he gets discouraged when God doesn’t react to his prayers in a timely fashion.

“If he [God] loves me so much, why is he taking his time? I want action. It’s so hard to be patient. I’m not here long enough to be completely comfortable with God’s timeline…. It’s so hard to understand that God has his own plan and that his plan is better for me than my quick fix.”

Each day’s segment takes no more than seven minutes to read, according to Mark Tabb, general editor of the books. “You can zip through it in less time than it takes for the marshmallows in your Lucky Charms to turn the milk in your cereal bowl a really funky color,” wrote Tabb in his introduction to “7 Minutes With God.”

Each volume contains 10 weeks of devotionals, with one theme per week.

For example, “7 Minutes with God” explores various qualities of God, such as being creative, passionate, powerful, frightening, silent, just, merciful, truthful and faithful.

Each day’s portion begins with a Bible passage, a reflection, a prayer and sometimes a call for action, such as fasting by skipping a meal or two.

“We didn’t write this devotion to give you 70 pithy thoughts,” Tabb wrote. “Instead, we want your Bible reading and prayer and fasts to be launching points for conversation between you and God that last much longer than 7 minutes each. Our goal is to help you think through your faith.”

Tonya Corning, a nursing major from Portland, Ore., whose piece on the priesthood of Jesus appears in “7 Minutes with Jesus,” says she is delighted to see her work in print.

“It feels so good to be able to express my feelings” publicly, Corning said as she sat at a table with fellow writers autographing copies for university trustees during a recent reception to honor the authors. “The hardest part was expressing yourself and trying to get what you mean on paper.”

Her piece was based on 1 Peter 2:9-10, which says God’s people are chosen to be the instrument to do his work.

“If you belong to God, he wants to use you,” she wrote. “Too often we think this means going out to the far corners of the Earth to help strangers. “Before you go searching the far corners of the Earth for someone to share Christ’s love with, take a look at your life. Think about people you interact with every day.”

Dennis Marinello, 19, of San Diego, who is studying philosophy and the Bible, said, “It’s so cool; I got published. They encouraged us to be honest, open and real.”

Marinello’s contribution, also in “7 Minutes with Jesus,” addressed his friendship with a homeless man and how that led to sharing his faith with other homeless people. His accompanying prayer said, in part:

“Oh, God, the more I feel your call to do something for you, the more ashamed I feel for all I don’t do. When did commitment to Christ become optional? Why don’t I act when you tell me to? Why aren’t my convictions strong enough to make me act? What’s holding me back?”

The student authors, professors and the school did not receive any pay for the project. The reward was getting the students involved in the real world, said service learning director Hutchinson. “This allows us to give them the opportunity to have a voice beyond the walls of academia.”

The professors chose 300 essays to send to the publisher, which then whittled the number to 123 for publication.

“I was really proud of them; it means the world to them,” said the Rev. Michael Bruner, who teaches a writing seminar for freshmen. “Some of them even had tears in their eyes when they found out they were being published.”

Those whose works got published weren’t necessarily the best students, Bruner said. “The students who got published were the ones who asked questions. They were the ones whose reflections were raw and earthy … students who were most struggling with their faith.”

Joseph Bentz, a professor of English, said his students were motivated to do their best work because they knew it might see print.

Bentz said his students began with research. After they wrote their first draft, they did peer critiquing. That was followed by a second draft. He met with them individually to go over their work. He graded the papers as if they were any other class assignment, he said.

Bruner said some of his students told him they didn’t want anyone else in the class to read what they wrote. “I said, ‘I will be the only one that will be reading it for now. If you’re lucky, tens of thousands of people will read it. Make sure you are comfortable with that.’ “

  • Ok-
Church yesterday was not as bad as I thought it would be. Don’t get me wrong–it was still hard, just not as bad as I thought. Pastor Baize did this whole message on leaving a legacy and talked a lot about Christy and I, and how our fingerprints are left all over the church. It was very nice. There were still people that were shocked and sad at the announcement (there was a letter in the bulletin and stuff…) but I had envisioned something quite a bit more dramatic. Phew! Glad I was wrong…

Next Level worship was fun for me. I didn’t play anything, but just sang and led worship-which is SUPER different and not in my comfort zone at all. It was a stretching and growing experience for me, but I had a fun time doing it, and I enjoyed jamming with my peeps in the band. btw-thanks to Melsmells for holding it together on the keys-you rock!

More things to pray about. I think I blew Christy’s mind this morning. Can’t talk about it really, but you guys can pray about it. Thanks.

Harry Potter on Thursday night at 12:01 AM, Fashion Valley AMC-be there!

  • Today is going to be a hard day at church. I can feel it. It’s the day they announce that we’re leaving, but even worse than that, there is an insert in the bulletin about it. Yes, a half-page letter that I wrote about our departure with a color pic and a title that says “Saying Goodbye”. I guarantee that there will be people freaking out before/during the service and it is going to be weird and difficult to lead worship. Yikes!
    Help me Lord.

I’m also leading worship in NEXT LEVEL. Never done that before, so it’ll be interesting. Help!

    Here’s a pic of Christy and I circa April, 2000. (Pre-kids, of course…)

BELOW is a cool pic from the Summer’s Night concert. Only thing I don’t like about it is that stupid date at the bottom…hello Al Clifft!!

  • Just bought the new Harry Potter soundtrack on iTunes thanks to a b-day gift certificate from Mike-THANKS! It’s pretty good. Gotta hook my iPod up so I get it on there…Hedwig’s Theme is only in tracks 1 & 5, but that’s OK, it’s still great even though it’s not John Williams…it’s all in a similar style to keep the threads of the film tied together…nice purchase…

So who buys CD’s anymore? I haven’t bought an actual CD in forever…It’s so much cheaper on iTunes and WAY more conveniant…c’mon people, get with the times. It’s the END of 2005…iTunes is the way to go!

Oh, and yes, of course I will keep blogging, to all of you faithful Midway readers who want to still stay in touch…

  • Yes, the cat is out of the bag. We’re moving to Los Angeles on Dec 31st. I told the choir last night, so it’s officially public. Although, it sure seemed like everyone already knew before that, and WE didn’t tell anybody…hmmm….no, actually, there were several people that didn’t know and we’re pretty shocked. That was the hard part-all the crying and the sorrow. Christy and I are very much people pleasers, so it’s tough to dissapoint people. This time we have to be God-pleasers, though, not people-pleasers, it’s absoulutely mandatory we follow God’s path on this one. So you guys can be praying for us that we follow Him.
We will truly miss Midway like none other. The people here have changed our lives, and we will never forget you…(that sounds pretty dramatic now that I read it back, but what can I say?).

So I’m sure people have thought about dropping out of the music program at Midway after we leave, and to them I say “Poopoo on you!”. You aren’t serving me, you are serving the Lord! Here’s the scripture I read last night to the choir right before I told them we’re leaving…(Hebrews 12:1-3)
    ——-
1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
    ——-

And I really emphasized LET US FIX OUR EYES ON JESUS and CONSIDER HIM…SO THAT YOU WILL NOT GROW WEARY AND LOSE HEART. Hopefully people wlll understand and not bail on choir/orchestra/worship team just beacuse I leave. We’re all serving the Lord together guys. If you stop serving Him because I leave, what does that say about what me? Hopefully I’ve taught you guys that this isn’t about me, it’s all about God. Continue to serve Him no matter where I am…please!

A shout out to Mike for standing up for me in choir last night. Not that I was being bullied or anything, but Mike just blurts out something to the effect of “There is WAY too much talking going on here and it’s TOTALLY disrespectful to Daniel…” Way to go, Mike! Thanks man! Props to you for being pissed off on my account! I appreciate it!

The Office was interrupted 2x by stupid election updates…argh. One of them was about 10 minutes long…So sad…

  • EDIT ADD: went to the Dr. for Christy for, hm, at least ten hours, I swear…hopefully she feels better…

    B-day report:

So thanks to all for your kindness and your gifts on my b-day.The day part was nice…so here’s what happened on the rest of the day…
Christy tells me that we can do anything I want…so we start the first episode of Battlestar Galactica (which happens to be the most awesomest show ever! Ohmigosh!). It was thrilling! Then we had to go, so we went off to downtown. I couldn’t really decide where to go, etc…but I did want to spend my Gap gift cert that my parents gave me (thanks mom!). But first, my favorite restaurant-Pat and Oscars. So we are circling around and around downtown, and no p&o’s…finally we find the corner where I’m 99% positive it USED to be. Yes, it was closed and gone–and evidently is now a Preudential reality…I was so sad.
Ok-onto Horton Plaza to the Gap. Yes…got the kids out, found our way to the Gap, which was ALSO CLOSED. Not just closed though, closed for remodeling…and will open again Wednesday…Oh man! Strike #2…
So we decide to get a Jamba Juice-I think the guy was new though, ’cause he took forever and he made the wrong drink for me…no problem, I still have a good attitude. Noah, however, does not…
Then, it’s off to Fashion Valley, ’cause I want to go to the Gap, dang it! Blah, blah, blah…I did find one shirt that was on sale, but overall, that store just doesn’t seem to have sale items and I am NOT spending $50 on a shirt…no thanks…
It was pretty sad overall, but we did watch a little more of Battlestar Galactica when we got home…gosh, maybe I should’ve gone to the Chris Tomlin concert!!!!

Pray for Christy–not only can I not get a decent night’s sleep ’cause she is up all night (I can’t remember when the last time was when I got some GOOD sleep) but she is REALLY sick. Not getting any better…Poor Christy…

btw-The Message//Remix is pretty interesting to read. It really trips you out, especially if you’ve only read NIV or something…but it certainly does give a different perspective…

  • EDIT ADD: Starbucks Holiday drinks are here. Gingerbread Latte, Egg Nog Latte, Peppermint Mocha…
    *singing*
“It’s the most wonderful time of the year…”
    Happy Birthday to ME!! Yum!!
    ==========

At Dinner Rally at APU they gave us this devo book (see currently reading) and it’s cool. I guess it was written by students, for students at APU. I like it…I also think they’re giving one to every student or something. Way to go, APU. I love you…

Oh yes, today is my birthday. 26…I hear it’s all downhill from here…which is funny, ’cause about of my friends are 30 (not to mention my lovely wife, who will be only 4 years apart in age from me for 34 days, until she goes back to being 5 years apart…ha!). Yeah, that’s going to hit her hard, she says-31. Ouch.

Gotta get ready for Christmas! 4 reheasals and counting…Tuesday night’s rehearsal is a big one!

Oh yeah, and I won at NERTZ last night. I’m the King again…

  • a couple of exciting things are coming next week… here’s a preview…

    I can’t wait…

Props to Carleene for teaching NERTZ to her family…that’s all I ask–that the NERTZ legacy lives on!!
…even if she did have to call three times to make sure the rules were right… heeheehee!!!

Off to the Star Trek Experience…

  • Hmm…quickly…

looking forward to our Anniversary trip that takes us to, where else but the Star Trek Experience…yes, it’s gonna be a tradition, thanks MPC! We’ll be gone FRI/SAT…
Sin City?? It’s more like Nerd City… *ahem*

    See ya later!
