  • Graduation from 1st Grade

Today was the boys' last day of school for the 2009-2010 year.

It's sure seems a bit early in the year...I seem to remember school ending sometime around the middle of June, but WHATEVER...

Well, Noah informed me that today at 11 o'clock he graduated from 1st grade and is now a 2nd grader.

WHA???  Noah is in 2nd grade now?!?

But that's not even the weird part...my elder son, Nathaniel, is going to be in fourth grade next year.  And this summer he turns 9...NINE years old.

It's been a landmark year for our family.  I turned 30...Christy and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary...and now my kid is turning NINE.

And with all of this happening I'm really starting to feel the responsibility of fatherhood.
("starting to???" you might say, "perhaps it's a little late to START thinking about fatherhood").  No...I don't really mean "starting to", I think what I mean is...we're about to start a new phase of parenting now that Nathaniel is getting a little bit older.  Soon he will be in middle school...then high school...and...oh man...I can barely even imagine...

Soon enough Nathaniel is going to start thinking about boy-ish things, I guess...instead of just kid-ish things.  And perhaps the choices Christy and I make in parenting this next few years will be incredibly important in his life--potentially setting the foundation for the choices HE will make when he faces temptations and difficult situations as a young man.

It's a good thing I'm not doing it alone.  I have a wonderful partner in crime...err...spouse to back me up and hold me accountable when I get weird.

    But it's scary.

Thank you, Lord, for the guidance in your WORD!

  • More Lost-y Thoughts

A friend of mine posted this on his FB profile...I "shared" it, but I don't think it is viewable by everyone...but it is TOO WONDERFUL to miss (if you're a Lost-ie).

No more theorizing...no more guessing...this is straight from the writers room at Bad Robot (the company that made Lost):
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    First ...
    The Island:

It was real. Everything that happened on the island that we saw throughout the 6 seasons was real. Forget the final image of the plane crash, it was put in purposely to mess with people's heads and show how far the show had come. They really crashed. They really survived. They really discovered Dharma and the Others. The Island keeps the balance of good and evil in the world. It always has and always will perform that role. And the Island will always need a "Protector". Jacob wasn't the first, Hurley won't be the last. However, Jacob had to deal with a malevolent force (MIB) that his mother, nor Hurley had to deal with. He created the devil and had to find a way to kill him -- even though the rules prevented him from actually doing so.

Thus began Jacob's plan to bring candidates to the Island to do the one thing he couldn't do. Kill the MIB. He had a huge list of candidates that spanned generations. Yet everytime he brought people there, the MIB corrupted them and caused them to kill one another. That was until Richard came along and helped Jacob understand that if he didn't take a more active role, then his plan would never work.

Enter Dharma -- which I'm not sure why John is having such a hard time grasping. Dharma, like the countless scores of people that were brought to the island before, were brought there by Jacob as part of his plan to kill the MIB. However, the MIB was aware of this plan and interfered by "corrupting" Ben. Making Ben believe he was doing the work of Jacob when in reality he was doing the work of the MIB. This carried over into all of Ben's "off-island" activities. He was the leader. He spoke for Jacob as far as they were concerned. So the "Others" killed Dharma and later were actively trying to kill Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley and all the candidates because that's what the MIB wanted. And what he couldn't do for himself.

Dharma was originally brought in to be good. But was turned bad by MIB's corruption and eventually destroyed by his pawn Ben. Now, was Dharma only brought there to help Jack and the other Candidates on their overall quest to kill Smokey? Or did Jacob have another list of Candidates from the Dharma group that we were never aware of? That's a question that is purposely not answered because whatever answer the writers came up with would be worse than the one you come up with for yourself. Still ... Dharma's purpose is not "pointless" or even vague. Hell, it's pretty blatant.

Still, despite his grand plan, Jacob wanted to give his "candidates" (our Lostaways) the one thing he, nor his brother, were ever afforded: free will. Hence him bringing a host of "candidates" through the decades and letting them "choose" which one would actually do the job in the end. Maybe he knew Jack would be the one to kill Flocke and that Hurley would be the protector in the end. Maybe he didn't. But that was always the key question of the show: Fate vs Free-will. Science vs Faith. Personally I think Jacob knew from the beginning what was going to happen and that everyone played a part over 6 seasons in helping Jack get to the point where he needed to be to kill Smokey and make Hurley the protector -- I know that's how a lot of the writers viewed it. But again, they won't answer that (nor should they) because that ruins the fun.

In the end, Jack got to do what he always wanted to do from the very first episode of the show: Save his fellow Lostaways. He got Kate and Sawyer off the island and he gave Hurley the purpose in life he'd always been missing. And, in Sideways world (which we'll get to next) he in fact saved everyone by helping them all move on ...

    Now...

    Sideways World:

Sideways world is where it gets really cool in terms of theology and metaphysical discussion (for me at least -- because I love history/religion theories and loved all the talks in the writer's room about it). Basically what the show is proposing is that we're all linked to certain people during our lives. Call them soulmates (though it's not exactly the best word). But these people we're linked to are with us doing "the most important moments of our lives" as Christian said. These are the people we move through the universe with from lifetime to lifetime. It's loosely based in Hinduism with large doses of western religion thrown into the mix.

The conceit that the writers created, basing it off these religious philosophies, was that as a group, the Lostaways subconsciously created this "sideways" world where they exist in purgatory until they are "awakened" and find one another. Once they all find one another, they can then move on and move forward. In essence, this is the show's concept of the afterlife. According to the show, everyone creates their own "Sideways" purgatory with their "soulmates" throughout their lives and exist there until they all move on together. That's a beautiful notion. Even if you aren't religious or even spiritual, the idea that we live AND die together is deeply profound and moving.

It's a really cool and spiritual concept that fits the whole tone and subtext the show has had from the beginning. These people were SUPPOSED to be together on that plane. They were supposed to live through these events -- not JUST because of Jacob. But because that's what the universe or God (depending on how religious you wish to get) wanted to happen. The show was always about science vs faith -- and it ultimately came down on the side of faith. It answered THE core question of the series. The one question that has been at the root of every island mystery, every character backstory, every plot twist. That, by itself, is quite an accomplishment.

How much you want to extrapolate from that is up to you as the viewer. Think about season 1 when we first found the Hatch. Everyone thought that's THE answer! Whatever is down there is the answer! Then, as we discovered it was just one station of many. One link in a very long chain that kept revealing more, and more of a larger mosaic.

But the writer's took it even further this season by contrasting this Sideways "purgatory" with the Island itself. Remember when Michael appeared to Hurley, he said he was not allowed to leave the Island. Just like the MIB. He wasn't allowed into this sideways world and thus, was not afforded the opportunity to move on. Why? Because he had proven himself to be unworthy with his actions on the Island. He failed the test. The others, passed. They made it into Sideways world when they died -- some before Jack, some years later. In Hurley's case, maybe centuries later. They exist in this sideways world until they are "awakened" and they can only move on TOGETHER because they are linked. They are destined to be together for eternity. That was their destiny.

They were NOT linked to Anna Lucia, Daniel, Roussou, Alex, Miles, Lupidis, (and all the rest who weren't in the church -- basically everyone who wasn't in season 1). Yet those people exist in Sideways world. Why? Well again, here's where they leave it up to you to decide. The way I like to think about it, is that those people who were left behind in Sideways world have to find their own soulmates before they can wake up. It's possible that those links aren't people from the island but from their other life (Anna's parnter, the guy she shot --- Roussou's husband, etc etc).

A lot of people have been talking about Ben and why he didn't go into the Church. And if you think of Sideways world in this way, then it gives you the answer to that very question. Ben can't move on yet because he hasn't connected with the people he needs to. It's going to be his job to awaken Roussou, Alex, Anna Lucia (maybe), Ethan, Goodspeed, his father and the rest. He has to atone for his sins more than he did by being Hurley's number two. He has to do what Hurley and Desmond did for our Lostaways with his own people. He has to help them connect. And he can only move on when all the links in his chain are ready to. Same can be said for Faraday, Charlotte, Whidmore, Hawkins etc. It's really a neat, and cool concept. At least to me.

But, from a more "behind the scenes" note: the reason Ben's not in the church, and the reason no one is in the church but for Season 1 people is because they wrote the ending to the show after writing the pilot. And never changed it. The writers always said (and many didn't believe them) that they knew their ending from the very first episode. I applaud them for that. It's pretty fantastic. Originally Ben was supposed to have a 3 episode arc and be done. But he became a big part of the show. They could have easily changed their ending and put him in the church -- but instead they problem solved it. Gave him a BRILLIANT moment with Locke outside the church ... and then that was it. I loved that. For those that wonder -- the original ending started the moment Jack walked into the church and touches the casket to Jack closing his eyes as the other plane flies away. That was always JJ's ending. And they kept it.

For me the ending of this show means a lot. Not only because I worked on it, but because as a writer it inspired me in a way the medium had never done before. I've been inspired to write by great films. Maybe too many to count. And there have been amazing TV shows that I've loved (X-Files, 24, Sopranos, countless 1/2 hour shows). But none did what LOST did for me. None showed me that you could take huge risks (writing a show about faith for network TV) and stick to your creative guns and STILL please the audience. I learned a lot from the show as a writer. I learned even more from being around the incredible writers, producers, PAs, interns and everyone else who slaved on the show for 6 years.

In the end, for me, LOST was a touchstone show that dealt with faith, the afterlife, and all these big, spiritual questions that most shows don't touch. And to me, they never once waivered from their core story -- even with all the sci-fi elements they mixed in. To walk that long and daunting of a creative tightrope and survive is simply astounding.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------

    Agreed, agreed, and AGREED.

  • Goodbye LOST...

Three years ago I would have posted all my thoughts about the LOST series finale here, on xanga.

    Not so much now...

BUT there are some pretty heated conversations going on over on my facebook profile.  I invite you to join in on the fun, if you haven't already...

But as for me and my house, we will miss the Lost.

I would be remiss if I didn't post a link to my favorite Lostie author, Doc Jensen, and his last article about the show.

  • Flip Videos of Awesomeness, Vol. 1

    My family is precious.

Here are some videos taken to "capture the moment", from mom's new HD Flip.

  • I'm Trying, I PROMISE (the continuing saga)

    SOoooooooo...

You might recall this post from a week or two ago.

Well...it turns out that my Mother's Day gift to Christy was a success! Hooray!
I got her an HD Flip video so she could "capture the moment".  It turns out that somehow time is speeding up in our lives.  I can't explain it--it's a conundrum--but it's true.  Every week moves along more quickly than the last and we find ourselves back at Monday again...and over and over this happens...and now it's 2010 and my first born is ABOUT TO TURN NINE.

    Yes.

I am about to have a freaking nine year old.

    (dramatic pause for effect)

(dramatic pause waiting for shock and awe to wear off)

(and now just pausing dramatically cause I'm a dork)

    aaaannd...

Needless to say...both our boys are growing up too quickly...life is ZOOMING by and our old camcorder (wha?? what is that?!?) won't even dump video on to my Mac Pro anymore.  BECAUSE IT'S TOO OLD.
So the Flip seemed like a great way to say, "Hey baby--our kids are about to go off to college and get married, so let's cherish these fleeting moments while we can".  And this Mother's Day, I think she got the message.

    (Videos will be posted soon)

So my gift giving adventure was a success!

AAAAAAAANNND I still have my sister's birthday card sitting on my dresser.  Her birthday was April 5th.  Yes.  It is April 5th EVERY YEAR.  And how often do I get her a card on time? Zero-point-zero-zero times.  In all of life.

    EPIC FAIL.

Sister--the only way I'm able to cope with my massive failure in this area is to broadcast my lameness for all the world to see.  This way at least it's out in the open that I'm the biggest LOSER OF A BROTHER EVER.

    :)

    Semsen OUT.

  • Nathaniel's Story

Nathaniel has been writing this story off and on for several months now...sometimes he doesn't touch it for a couple of weeks, but just yesterday he completed his first section/chapter/whatever and it's just too cute...
I helped him with a couple of spelling errors, but only a couple...and I just let the rest of the grammar/spelling/formatting go CAUSE HE'S EIGHT.
He's been writing it on Christy's laptop.

    OGOODIE BOGOODIE’S

    ADVENTURE

    THE VILLIAN REVEALED

    By Nathaniel David Semsen

    and

    Noah Walter Semsen

One day a group of children went into a science lab , where there lay the greatest invention of science history The Curious Hairinator! They acted like they were on TV, and one of the kids hit the trigger button and it accidentally hit Ogoodie Bogoodie ZAP!  His life was changed FOREVER…

The Curious Hairinator  turned Ogoodie Bogoodie into a Strong Curious Hairy Monster!

One of the kids named Billy looked out the window and saw a meteor coming right

towards them! After he spread the word,

everyone hustled and bustled like a stampede to get to the door, but it was too late. They didn’t know it but there was a

bomb implanted in the meteor and whenever it touches something it blows up. BOOM!

    CRASH!AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

The kids dodged the falling asphalt & just when they felt like it was the end, Ogoodie Bogoodie picked them up & ran.  When he finally reached the door he put them down and he was so

embarrassed that he ran before he got any

credit. When he got home to his mother she screamed,

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Get away from me!         It’s me Mom said O.B. Nobody knows its me, said Ogoodie Bogoodie. The next day he went to school and went into class.

Everybody screamed AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! NO! O.B. ran from the classroom and ran to the park with the ease of speed. “WOAH!” said O.B. I can run as fast as Flash! I’ll go say hi to Bob Mercury the Balloon Man. Hi buddy, Do I know you? Can I have a balloon? Sure mister, take all of them. [completely doesn’t recognize him] Thank You. When he started walking he noticed he couldn’t feel the ground. WOAH! Now there’s a surprise! UH OH! O.B. flew into the air and nearly hit a wall. SSSSSSSSSS, Cool. I can go thorough walls. As he was going towards sharp spikes, POP! When he was about to hit the ground he flew up and flew to the ground .  Everybody stared at him .  UHHHHHH!

He ran away hoping somebody would recognize him . Wait ! Hey ,it’s O.B. from the science lab. It is ? What ? E.T.C. The next day at school he had a lot of new friends .  He was great at tag for example if someone is chasing him near a wall he would go right thorough it and the other person would bump into it.  Playing with my powers is fun, but I should save people and defeat Super Villains!   My name should be SUPERMAN,  no that name is already taken. [thinking]  I could be THE BOOGIE MAN too goofy.  [pauses] SUPER BOOG Perfecto!

Luckily, he got his first customer, The Snicker Snag!  His power was to make people snicker while he snags their property.  He knew he could take him down, but it didn’t turn out that way.   It turns out he was hiding a blaster behind his back and blasted the arm right off of him.  Gladly, it didn’t hurt him but he still had an empty socket.  YIKES!  Right away he went to a mechanic who made him a mechanic-arm.  OB decided to change his name to Mechanis! BAD LUCK!  The Control Freak’s plan had worked!  [you can tell what his power is from his name]  The mechanic was actually The Control Freak! [Snicker Snag’s Boss] He decided to implant a camera inside and learn his address number to attack him any time he wanted. We all know we don’t want that to happen, but it did.  It became really messy.  That week was followed by drama and tragedy.  The CF flooded OB’s house but, it went through the bomb supply and carried the bomb to his neighbor’s house and the swift  current triggered the bomb and it blew.  BOOM!  The CF screamed in distress.  THAT WAS GOING TO BE MY NEW HIDEOUT!!!!  He would not dare try the same trick again because of course it would go wrong.  After Mechanis [OB] saved their neighbors Mechanis pondered until he figured it out.  Of course it was the CONTROL FREAK!

    TO BE CONTINUED…

I just love this story...I totally used to write silly things like this when I was his age.
    Except I used paper.

    and a pen.

    Not my mom's laptop.

    ---

And this morning he said, "I'm so proud of my story.  And I put Noah's name on it too...what do you say, Noah?"

    Noah: "Thank you"

  • I'm Trying, I PROMISE

Remember that post a while back about how I'm a terrible gift-giver?

    Well I still am.

But I'm trying to get better...really, really trying...

This year I actually sent birthday cards to my mom and my brother--albeit they were late.  Like...pretty darn late.  AND my poor, poor sister...her birthday was on April 5th and I JUST bought a card (SOORRY SIS!!!) it IS going to be mailed ASAP.

    I'm just so sorry...I really am. :)   I'm a gift-giving mess.

But I'm trying to take steps in the right direction.

    AND to prove it...

I am buying my wife a mother's day present--like now.  Not on Saturday night at 9pm when I realize that tomorrow is Mother's Day and I run to Vons (like I'm running on this sentence) and look for whatever pitiful excuse for a card there is left...(usually in Spanish).   I'm actually thinking ahead.

    See.

    People CAN change.

What? What am I getting her for Mother's Day, you ask?

    Pure awesomeness.

I don't even know what to say...it's just crazy talk...and still feels a bit surreal...so I'll just SAY IT.

A kids musical written by my genius wife, and arranged by me releases TODAY worldwide from choral music publisher Word Music.
We took all of my wife's talent and all of my nerdiness and combined them to create the work BACK TO THE MANGER: A Caroling Adventure Through Time.

To check it out, click on the link above or just head on over to www.wordmusic.com and search for it--or it might even be on the front page of the website if you look around.  You can listen to samples of each of the songs and order a CD or other materials there.

We performed it this past Christmas at our church and the kids had a blast singing the songs!  We really tried to keep things fresh and fun...and I think it NO mistake that Nathaniel (my firstborn) was cast as the NERD in the show...not the bad boy...but the NERD.  And he played it quite well, if I say so myself (good role models in the home, in terms of nerdiness, that is).
    Did I mention I was a nerd?

We are really proud of this thing...and I hope that you get a chance to hear it.  We did everything with live musicians at Ocean Way Studios in Nashville, and the players just KILLED it during the sessions.  They just were more awesome than I could have imagined.

If you HAPPEN to be a kids choir director and you're stopping by...feel free to drop us a line.  We're more than happy to answer questions (even ones pertaining to the space-time continuum) and help out in any way that we can.

And if you're a friend/family member...thanks for your support...you all are much loved by us :)

(side note: an anthem I arranged/orchestrated for Word Music ALSO releases today.  It is Brooke Fraser's Hosanna...a great song! Check it out!)

  • Tina Fey, a Dragon, and a Brownie Husband

It's been a long time since I've written here...so long, in fact, that I feel like I need to have some sort of epic bloggity come back.

So, I use up all kinds of energy thinking about what that would be, but I can't come up with anything because come on, we all know this is a silly little doo-hicky of a blog.  Nothing important happens here except movie reviews and SNL sketch postings...and the occasional family update.

    So, why fight it?

    Just do it.
    ------------------------------

    MOVIES

First off, I need to inform you that our movie-going spree came to a quick halt.  Around November, we started heading down to San Diego on other days besides Friday night...and our weekly trip to Harkins was no more.  We became engrossed in rehearsals and performances and birthday parties and anniversary trips and blah blah blah...tons and tons of stuff that kept us from Harkins.  It was sad.  We really missed it--so much that on Christmas weekend we went to 4 movies in 28 hours.  Don't ask me how it's possible, because I'm not quite sure I have an answer for you (and that time frame included Sunday morning church).  We were like movie zombies.

    It was awesome.

Fast-forward to EASTER (what?!? already?!!) and we're still not back on the movie-wagon.  We've only seen a couple of films recently--both this past weekend--so here's the scoop.

    Date Night
It was pretty funny.  Not as ridiculous as I was expecting--but it had heart, and an element of realism that made it warm and authentic.  And it was also quite funny.  How can Tina Fey and Steve Carrell not be funny? Well, they were...it's worth watching even though you won't be rolling in the isles--it's a great flick...and it has some hilarious moments.

    How to Train a Dragon
This movie is the best movie I've seen this year.  It was simply, AMAZING.  This movie is the kind of thing that happens when you have great writers, great actors, and fantastic directors.  It was brilliant.  We took the kids and they had a blast.  We were unable to see it in 3D because the time didn't work out for us, but I didn't miss anything in 2D...because you didn't need to rely on that to help the movie along--the story was simply captivating.
I give it my highest recommendation.  And go check the other critics...they all agree.
A note--the theater was still ALL the way FULL 2-3 weeks after opening weekend...that should tell you something right there...

And finally...let's just say it--Tina Fey is really, really funny.

If you don't watch 30 Rock, you are missing out--and if you weren't a fan of SNL in this past decade...I'm sorry.

And I must say--it is SOMETHING when an ex-head-writer-turned-Emmy-winning-comedy-star/movie-star comes back to host the show.  It was stinkin great.

I was going to embed a hulu video of Brownie Husband here...but alas, I will not...
If you are super dooper interested, go find it on your own...it's fuh. nee.

  • Pray for me

I have lots and lots of work to do in the next 10 days or so...
    I'll see you after Easter...
