  • Starbucks VIA

Starbucks VIA Instant Coffee hits stores today all over the U.S. of A—and it’s YUMMY.

My first memory of instant coffee dates waaaaaaaaay back to a little glass jar of Folgers Instant that my mom (and her mother before her) kept tucked away in the cupboard for when coffee-drinking guests came over…which, as I remember, never actually happened.  I’m pretty sure that freeze-dried stuff has a shelf like of about 1,000 years since it was always in that same place in the cupboard, nary to be used by my family.  My mom drank tea every day, several times a day, and I didn’t drink coffee until college.  I think I’ve spent the last ten years making up for the lost coffee-drinking years of my youth.

Starbucks, however, has been working on this brand of coffee for TWENTY whole years–and in my humble opinion, they got it right.  And you know what else is cool?  They made a 10 oz. travel cup that has a removable bottom where you can slide up to six packets of VIA to take with you wherever you go–IN THE MUG!!!  It looks a little bit like that thing that Newman used on Jurassic Park to smuggle those dinosaur DNA packets off the Island–which–JURASSIC PARK SPOILER ALERT–if you remember, got buried in the mud after those screeching, flappy-eared dinos ate him up in his jeep.  Mmmm.  That was an awesome movie.  But I digress…

Drop by your local Starbucks for a taste of VIA sometime over the next few days.  It’s really good stuff.

    EDIT ADD:

The Jurassic Park mug (as I like to call it).

  • that mug has a place to put the packet?  You need to show me that!

  • They just keep succeeding, don’t they?

  • @klappyanne - I miiiiiiiiight be biased.  But hey, if you were trying to get something right after 19.5 years I bet your motto would be “we just keep failing…” am I right? Am I right?

But then 6 months later you NAIL it. And boom…

  • I am buying that mug.

Ok, I went into Starbucks this morning and they convinced me to do a blind taste test of VIA compared with Pike’s Place. Now, I loathe Pike’s, so I might be biased, but I, of course, won the taste test (not like it was a competition or anything…but still, I won) and picked which one was instant. BUT the real kicker was – I liked the instant 100 times more than the Pike’s. I was very impressed. Way to be, Starbucks. Way to be indeed.

  • @marshallismyalias - I am also buying that mug. Why?

    Because I love Jurassic Park.

  • I love Dennis Nedry.

  • Love the mug.

That dilophosaurus had himself a mighty feast!  …and they were dinosaur EMBRYOS… not just “DNA packets”.

As for the coffee, I say, “Whatever.”  Coffee is for weaklings.  ;)

  • @sc0tlas - oh Scott…oh Scott…I know about the “embryos”. I’ve seen that movie so many times I could probably quote it to you RIGHT now…leftwards and forwards and backwards and rightwards.  I saw it about 12 times in one fortnight.

    Saying “DNA packets” is funner.

And now I’m just trying to annoy you. HAHAHA!
    IT WORKED, DIDN’T IT!?!?! MUAHAHA…

  • @dsemsen - JP was the first movie I saw in a theater more than once (I saw it thrice).  I was one of those kids that got to see it ONLY because they did a last-minute tweak to make it PG-13 instead of R.  Yay!

We should have a JP quoting party, because I’m right there with you.  And then we can have a “Make fun of JP2″ afterparty.  And then have a “Shun the 100% non-Crichton JP3″ after-afterparty.

  • If you guys have that party, you need to invite Aaron. It’s his favorite.

Also, I don’t think I can tell you how much my new embryo cup has just changed my life. The WORST (the WORST, Jerry!) part about going on vacation for me is losing my coffee control. I end up a lot of places where people don’t make coffee (gasp!) and sometimes places where there is no Starbucks nearby (double gasp!) But now, no worries. I’m set. And I will be drinking embryos.

    Wait. Ew.

    Taco-Tastic Tuesday next week!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @marshallismyalias - the problem is…I LIKED The Lost World.

Starbucks VIA has also changed MY life…now I don’t have to trapse off to SB every morning AND I’m not making an entire pot of coffee that may or may not go to waste.  It’s kinda like having a tassimo in my house. Yum.

  • @csemsen - @klappyanne - @sc0tlas - @marshallismyalias - I just cannot put into words how much I love my Jurassic Park mug.  It is wonderful.  I will never go into Starbucks again…I will only VIA in my mug…
