THE JACKET
I am not a materialistic person–well, at least not compared to a lot of Americans. I’m sure if you put me up next to someone living in the slums of India then YES, I’m materialistic, but I try to keep my desire for things in check (although sometimes I fail) and not to get hung up on any one thing. Because really? Things are JUST things.
Additionally, I’m not a very stylish person. I didn’t really wear anything half-way stylish until college because I didn’t really know how to shop for clothes until my friend Andy Balch showed me THE GAP…but I digress…and anyways–I already blogged that story.
(God bless Andy Balch.)SO…that said…
Cue the jacket story:
I like jackets.
I’ve especially noticed that lately a lot of guys with good fashion sensibilities are wearing cool jackets (the sport-coat kind, not rain-coat) over t-shirts and/or button-down shirts. I like this style and I think it fairs well with me. I bought a couple of jackets that I wear sometimes on Sunday mornings when leading worship, and I’ve been flirting with the idea of getting a new jacket for Easter Sunday–you know–the biggest day of the year for churches…Then there was Danny Gokey.
Tuesday night Danny wore this AWESOME black jacket. I saw it and IMMEDIATELY thought, “That is it! That’s the jacket I need to wear for Easter!”.
And I fell in love with the jacket.
I went on a 48-hour man-hunt for this jacket. I joined every chat-board/forum I could find about Danny Gokey, posting to see if anyone knew anything about the jacket.
They didn’t.I recruited certain resourceful friends to find it.
They failed.I looked day and night for this thing…until FINALLY I got smart. On the American Idol website it talked about the stylist, so I googled his name and found his website and clicked on the “contact me” button. JACKPOT. I emailed him…and he got back to me in the morning. EUREKA! The jacket was made by Dutch company G-Star…and there was a location here in L.A.!!!
You can imagine my excitement.
So I went to the location…and I was ready to spend a little bit of money on this thing, since it was totally glorious…
I giddily SKIPPED across the street from my parking place and into the store on Melrose Ave in Hollywood.I found the jacket.
I saw the price tag.
I looked at it again…just to make sure…
…and a saleswoman caught me. “Would you like to try this on?”
Yes.
Yes.
YES.“You’ll probably be the XXL size…”
uuuhhhhhhthankyou. Way to make me feel good inside.
And it fit like a dream.
A DREAM.
And I spent the next 30 minutes pacing around the outside of the store wrestling with myself to see if I could somehow beg, borrow, or steal enough money to buy this jacket.
But I couldn’t.So I sadly walked away. Empty handed…

Uh, and the price surprised you? My dearest brother, this is television! We live in the land of excess, and when you’re on TV, the excess is horrific.
BTW, we are definitely having “Jesu, Joy…” and Pachelbel’s Canon in D for the wedding. Jesu will be for the seating of the parents and Royce coming out, and Pachelbel will be my proceesional. So, since my walk won’t be that long, perhaps we could cut a little of it at the beginning and more into the meat of the song for when I come out? Also, the “Man from Snowy River” theme. I’m sure you know it, right? That’s really nice piano, and will be part of the pre-ceremony music.
Oops, not the Main Theme (although that’s really nice), I mean Jessica’s Theme.
Dude. You don’t need that matrix-emo-pimp jacket.
Ok, I know nothing about fashion, but SERIOUSLY. You don’t need it.
u can probably find it at Lane Bryant or Wet Seal. haha. try one of the swap meet type stores that have a lot of knock off looks…you might be surprised. I’ll keep my eyes out. oh wait I won’t be shopping before Easter…sorry.
I totally wish I had the money to get it for you.
SO, SO, SORRY! But I don’t blame you — know way would I pay $500 for a jacket. I’d have to wait until that thing was marked down to less than $100. You should have had the clerk call you when the jacket goes on clearance. And if you get the call, then the jacket was meant for you but if you don’t get the call, then it wasn’t meant to be yours anyhow.
Nevertheless, there’s probably an even better jacket out there with your name on it and if you hurry you can probably find it before Easter Sunday (& at a reasonable price to boot).
Thank you for a great laugh this morning! You are so funny sometimes – what a sense of humor! JD says you’ve gone Hollywood & that no one around here would wear a jacket like that.
) I think he’s wrong, but whatever. I’m still not into it, but I get how it would fit your style. I do own a purse that retails for $995, but hey, I got it at wholesale, so I justified it when I bought it. Plus resale value on these things is pretty darn good, too. Heeheehee.
What makes you a great blogger is sharing funny stories like these with the world – thanks for the entertainment. So all that said, aren’t you glad you’re not a materialistic person??
@sopranomom29 - do you have any kind of order figured out? Like a ceremony order or anything?? Just wondering…but I think I have the sheet music to those songs above…
@Tomaret - THAT IS SO SWEET! It’s OK…I’ve already started a savings account for it…I think I’ll be able to get it in 2011 HAHAHA…
@skwillson - tell JD that if I ever DO save enough money to buy it, I’ll let him try it on…then maybe he’ll understand the glory of the jacket…HAHA
Try emailing the strylist on the show EXTRA she always finds the fashions for less. Share with her your plit and I bet she could help ya out!! Just a thought! Cool jacket by the way!
