2009 – A Look Back
Happy New Year.
It’s 2009.
WOW.
I can’t believe it’s here.
So, in order to stay sane, and not have everything in my life blur together in one giant whirlwind, I’m interested to take a look back at:
What happened ten years ago?In 1999:
-Everybody was scared about the Y2K bug.
(what a downer, btw…that whole thing was LAME)-Daniel and Christy got married.
(We will be celebrating our 10-year anniversary in November)-I entered my Junior year at APU, and took a year off from being in UCO.
-Shakespeare In Love wins best picture at the 71st Academy Awards (REALLY!???! REALLY?!!???!)
-The Columbine High School Massacre took place on April 20th, shocking the nation
-I screwed up my first Christmas tree with my new bride of only about a month. (let’s just say, it fell over)
-Napster made it’s debut on the web
Before I became highly aware of copyright law and it’s affect on me and those around me as a musician, I downloaded a few things, including the Tron soundtrack (???)-I turned 20 years old, 6 days before my wedding.
In addition to celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary, we will also be celebrating my 30th birthday this year. (Ugh.) However, the GOOD news is that Christy wants to take
me to see SNL live in NYC. WAHOO!!So what were you doing in 1999?

1999 was not one of my favorite years…
Aside from the stuff you said:
In 1999, I was:
-Working briefly at a non-profit AIDS organization and led a small choir of men with HIV
-Worked about 6 months at APU in Undergrad Admissions Data Processing
-Got engaged in June, right before signing my first teaching contract- they said I could have 2 days off for my honeymoon. I didn’t think to question it
-Starting teaching choir, a touring group, and Music Appreciation for one year at Los Angeles Baptist High
-Got married in November
-Realized I hated driving in traffic 1 1/2 hours each way to work every day.
-Went to escape the Y2K bug in Twain Harte for New Years, all the while hoping that something would happen and school would be canceled forever and I wouldn’t have to go back.
I was getting ready to graduate from high school and come to APU. I was sooooo happy to be leaving.
In 1999, we were also getting married and we also turned 20 a week before we got married.
So, in December of 2009 we will be celebrating both our 30th birthday’s and 10th wedding anniversary with a trip to Germany and Spain!
Oh, and there is no way you’re turning 30. You’re like… 12.
I was in Spain working as the Chairman of Volunteers for the American Red Cross, completing my Bachelors Degree studies, singing in the Gospel Church Choir along with my husband and son, and visiting as much of Europe as possible. I believe in 1999 we went to Rome, Madrid, parts of Germany (mainly Ramstein & Heidelberg), Paris, Venice, Pisa , and Portugal. From Ramstein, Paris is only a 2.5 hour drive; it’s a straight shot down the A3 or maybe it was the A4 freeway.
I spent some time in the summer of 1999 in Oaxaca & Villahermosa Mexico before entering my senior year of high school….
Hmmm.
In 1999 I was a sophomore (then in Sept.) a junior in high school
I took my first plane ride and major vacation (errr… orchestra tour!) to Disney World
Met my first boyfriend… but didn’t start dating him til the following year
That’s about all I can remember for now!
’99 was when I came on staff at Midway. ’99 seems a long time ago but not so long ago at the same time. Time is a weird thing.
I remember my mom wouldn’t let me go on the Ecuador mission trip over Christmas break with APU because she was worried about me being out of the country during Y2K. My roommate got to go – I was so jealous!
On the bright side, New Year’s Eve of ’99, because my mom was too chicken to go out anywhere, my 5 other girl cousins, mom and aunt had a dance party in her living room…one of the last good memories I have of all of us together!
We got married in 1999, too! Woohoo! And we have yet to have our own Christmas tree in our house . . .
