  • OK. Let’s Just TALK About This…

I’m sorry…but this has to be said.

    I DID NOT LIKE WALL*E

Yes…I get it…the robots are more human than the humans…we need to save the earth…Americans are a bunch of fat, lazy slobs…we’re destroying the earth… I GET IT. I GET IT. I STINKING GET IT!
So why do you have to slap it across my face like that, Pixar? I recycle. I pre-ordered a Prius. I’m even showering and shaving less to save water! (wait. did I say that out loud??)
    Ugh.

I know, I know…my heart is black and cold…I’m an emotionless robot. Yes, yes…

But when I look back at the movies I’ve seen over this Summer–Dark Knight, Ironman, Get Smart…and thousands of others–Wall*E just comes up short. Or like…at the bottom of the list (if the top would be my favorite, and the bottom NOT my favorite). The only movie I think I liked less than Wall*E was You Don’t Mess With The Zohan (which I walked out of–too gross and stupid).

I liked Kung Fu Panda waaaaaay better…

So why is everyone raving about Wall*E?

And if my heart is black and cold, then why would I cry at Hellboy 2?

I leave you with these questions, oh blog-masters of the universe.

That’s not what it was about. If that’s what it was about it wouldn’t be nearly as popular as it is. It was about a robot, who happened to exist in much of the circumstance you described, who happened to be one of the most fascinating and joyful to watch characters to ever grace a movie screen – and who also happened to fall in love in a truly beautiful and innocent way, then do everything he could to save and hold onto that love.

It wasn’t slapping a “green” message across anyone’s face. If someone took away a message of conservation, that’s fine and great. but that’s not what the film was about. It was about, well, Wall-E. And Wall-E was awesome.

And Kung-Fu Panda can’t even hold Wall-E’s jock. KFP was a cartoon, Wall-E was an animated work of art.

  • You are “showing” and shaving less? Well, we all are certainly glad you are showing less.

  • shutup.

    fixed.

  • Mike–

Robots don’t fall in love. Not even in 700 years.
And Wall-E was not the most fascinating and joyful to watch characters to ever grace the screen. If you really think that, you need to see more movies.

    Wall-E was lame.

    LAAAAAME.

  • Whatever,  Kung Fu Panda boy. You enjoy the Panda while the rest of us are off watching grown-up movies.

  • I agree with Mike on this one.  You completely missed the point of the story by focusing on its backdrop.  My question for you and the blogosphere is, WHY do you get so annoyed by movies that give a glimpse of humanity’s wastefulness and lack of care for creation?  That’s great that you are taking measures to conserve, but from your sarcasm and caustic tone it sounds like you are doing it more out of guilt (which would explain your great annoyance whenever you see this sort of movie–I bet you hated Happy Feet and Fern Gully too) than out of an intrinsic desire?

    Hey, you asked!

And I loved Kung Fu Panda!

  • Yep, I agree with Daniel.  I felt the same way.  Hmmm…I thought it was more of a commentary on how we suck rather than the marvel that is Wall-E.  I think the point was valid, just kind of depressing for a Pixar film…

I did hate Happy Feet, but not because it had conservation as it’s message.

And, we did see the Dark Knight.  It was awesome.  A bit intense for me, but I can appreciate the  great story, screenplay, acting, etc.

  • So what I want to know is . . . was Hellboy 2 good?  Because I want to see that, too, but I need input.

  • Um, I have to go on record disagreeing with Daniel on this one.  His heart is black and cold.  Great movie about remembering what makes us human, and the simple joys of being a human.  Sorry dear.

  • Mike-
    Yeah. I’ll do that.

    Rachel-
It’s not that I’m annoyed at movies that are about conservation, it’s that I’m annoyed that someone would put such an obvious message in a movie that would have been perfect without it. AND to add injury to insult, it wasn’t a subtle message–it was IN YOUR FACE, but it tried to be subtle. It was just TOO MUCH and TOO heavy-handed. I mean, I can read into things, I appreciate subtlety and subtext. I’ll get it…you don’t have to pitch it to me like a used car salesman. It’s like when someone is hitting you over the head with the gospel. It’s such a turnoff to the whole idea.
Just this time, it wasn’t Jesus they were preaching, it was Mother Earth.

I know we need to save the earth. I know we’re destroying our natural resources. I even like that Al Gore is trying to use his clout and influence to let people know about this stuff. I can conserve and do my part like the next guy…just don’t tell me that I’m a fat, lazy, good-for-nothing slob in the middle of a cartoon! This movie was very promising! It looked to be another Pixar masterpiece! And honestly, if it weren’t for all of that crap, it actually might have been one.
Thanks for ruining it, Pixar guys.

I felt like Pixar was wearing a Christian T-Shirt that said “I’m the Christian the Devil warned you about”.

    Just ridiculous.

  • @skwillson - Hellboy 2 was awesome. I totally didn’t see it coming, but I loved it.
I watched the first one the day before in preparation, and thought it was good, but this one was way better. Great story, great depth to the characters, and funny.
It was also super creative. Del Toro is a master with fantasy and comic book story telling. I’m really excited to see The Hobbit now (since Jackson won’t direct it).

  • Mike is right.

Seriously??? Robots don’t fall in love? It’s an animated movies. Animated movies are all about bringing things alive that could never actually happen in real life. Wall-E was endearing and lovely. And as a person who sits in front of the TV far too much, I can totally get on board with the whole lazy human message. (Which still wasn’t the main point of the movie.)

Hello Dolly is also a favorite movie of mine, which I think also influenced me to love Wall-E.

Bottom line: Wall-E is awesome. You are not.

  • No, bottom line–You are retarded, and so is Wall-E, and Eve.

  • Oh, and Mike:
I’ll like Wall-E the day you watch Stardust.

    Deal?

  • Wall-E and Stardust are both awesome movies.

  • no deal. I don’t give a rip if you like Wall-E or not, nor do I care to watch Stardust. If you want to hate a great movie, your loss. Though you have let yourself be influenced – you didn’t dislike it like this when you originally saw it. You read other comments on a blog and morphed your opinion.

I’m going to give it to Nathaniel as a present so he can watch it all day long once it’s out on DVD, though.

< Robots don’t fall in love. Not even in 700 years.

Yeah. And rats aren’t chefs, toys don’t talk, bugs don’t have a life, monster’s done run corporations, cars don’t drive themselves, and superheroes aren’t real. Man, Pixar is really stupid, huh.

  • @MikeknaJ - >>>Though you have let yourself be influenced – you didn’t dislike it like this when you originally saw it

I never liked it. And I DID walk out of the theater annoyed by the same things I’m talking about now. You weren’t there, so how would you know?

    >>>>You read other comments on a blog and morphed your opinion.

Sure, I read someone else’s blog, and they happen to have the same opinion as me. Fancy that! I suppose you’re going to try and tell me that you’re NOT influenced by anything you read? Be it a blog or a news column? Are you KIDDING ME? All you write about is stuff you read about. Sure, you form your own opinions–but don’t try and tell me that you are not influenced by blogs, news columns, stories, movies, or anything else you put in your brain. It’s not possible. EVERYONE is influenced either positively or negatively by their experiences-including the things they see and read.
I never “morphed” my opinion. I simply restated it more clearly, perhaps. Or just more strongly.

Honestly, if you come back and try and tell me that you aren’t influenced by the stuff you read all the time on the web, I will think you’re a complete nincompoop.
    Just saying.

I never liked Wall-E. And the more I hear people rave about it, the more I’m annoyed.

    Agree to disagree.
    When in Rome.
    I’m Ron Burgandy?

  • >  You weren’t there, so how would you know?

I was just going by your initial comments about the movie, which were nowhere near as negative as they are now.

    But whatever. Your loss.
