Super Bowl Sunday
If you know me, you know I’m not a sports fan at all. I enjoy playing some sports, but not the popular American sports. I enjoy playing soccer, racquetball (just started that one), and maybe a couple others–but I don’t enjoy playing basketball or football like the majority of folks out there.
I also don’t like watching sports. I don’t know why, I just don’t. But today was the Super Bowl, and everybody watches the Super Bowl. It’s like going to church on Easter, or wrapping presents at Christmas–everybody does it. So we watched it…kinda. God bless my DVR. We actually (turn away die-hards) fast-forwarded through most all of the game and just stopped to watch the commercials and the half-time show. What!?!?!
Well, it was awesome. I’ve never enjoyed a Super Bowl so much. We just went through the nonsense (ahem, the game) and stopped to watch the commercials that companies literally spent millions to make and put out for todays event. I’m pretty sure that most of them were for beer, which tells me something about football fans…
I was actually also hoping to see a friend of mine that filmed a Bud Light commercial a couple of months ago. He wasn’t sure if it was going to be for Thanksgiving or for Super Bowl, but it wasn’t shown at Thanksgiving so we were looking for it today. We didn’t see it.
A couple of notes:
-Billy Joel singing the national anthem was an intriguing idea, but it fell a little flat. I love Billy Joel, he’s one of my all-time favorite artists. But it sounded odd. Maybe it was the rain, (which was all over the piano) or maybe it was something else, I don’t know. But it was not fantastic. It was just what it was, Billy’s voice doing the national anthem.-Prince’s half-time show was better than I thought it would be. In stark contrast to Billy Joel, I’m not a fan of Prince. It’s not necessarily that I don’t like him, I just haven’t heard a lot of his tunes and he looks a little weird. That said, it was kind of cool looking and I didn’t want to turn it off, so for me it was better than the strange artist on SNL last night (which I did skip after the first song).
-Once we reached the show in real time (unable to fast-forward it anymore) we just paused it and played Super Mario World on our vintage SNES and waited until we could do some more forwarding.
Yay for fast-forwarding the Super Bowl!!!

This is for all you crazy TV watchers that are addicted to so many shows that you don’t know what to do…

Maybe you “allegro vivace” through sports, but in my situation, lento (or possibly andante) is a wiser thing.
sometimes you blog about things (e.g. Tivo-ing through the actual game) and I’m embarassed for you…
Wats ^
I’m not embarassed for you. I am proud to have been a part of it.
Mike, we did stop fast forwarding when we saw players get injured…
Your Man card has been officially pulled until further notice.
^^At least I had one to pull…
OH SNAP!!!!
I’m glad I’m not the only one who fast-forwards through the game! Carol and I just went to Disneyland instead of wasting time at a Superbowl party, so I TiVo’d it and we’ll catch the good stuff later.
And I love that TV chart. Very cool. Unfortunately, it’s missing a few of my faves and attempting to force me to watch things like Amazing Race, Top Model, and Survivor!!! The only reality TV I watch is Dancing with the Stars because it’s awesome and Beauty and the Geek because it’s adorable. But I’ll take your chart under advisement!!
^^Well, it’s seriously like 21 hours of TV a week to watch…which is SOOOOOO much TV. Don’t feel like you need to see it all!!
“at least i had one to pull…oh snap”…yeah think about that for a second…
I am a HUGE Chargers fan, but not of football in general. Therefore, once the Chargers were out of it, the season was over for me. I let my husband go to a Super Bowl party with our friends while I stayed home to do paperwork, and I left the game on for background noise & so I could watch the half-time show (which was only OK). I’ve seen Billy Joel sing a few times live recently (on TV), and he is totally losing his voice. I think that’s why the national anthem didn’t sound very good. Just my opinion, though.
Jenn and I have decided that Disneyland is good on Super Bowl Sunday. Though ads are fun, too.
^^Really? I went once (6 years ago) and it was SOOO crowded. Everyone was at the ESPN Zone…maybe it’s different now though.
I normally love to watch football but I was sooo sick this past Sunday I really didn’t care. ^^Hey, that reminds me, I miss Disneyland…time for a road trip!
I’m a big football fan, I enjoy watching and I DO NOT enjoy BEER. I know Im not legally allowed to drink beer but Im pretty sure that when I am Football, beer, and me, will never cross. ONLY JORGE AND FOOTBALL (maybe rootbeer)
I think that beer is a huge sponsor of football because football has such a huge audience.
They can advertise their product with a huge geographic advantage
Wow, I never thought to do THAT! We’ll have to try that next year.
We didn’t go to the ESPN Zone, so that probably helped…:) The park itself was mostly families with little kids and poor long-suffering daddies who probably wanted to sneak off to the ESPN Zone.
^^HA! Nice.
ok! I want to SO bad!
What time on thursdays do you meet for practice?
p.s. i totally agree with your post about the super bowl. lol
I agree Billy Joel sounded quite off. There were some notes that were actually hard to listen to. My impression was that it sounded like he was frustrated, and every wrong note made him more frustrated, so things just snowballed as the song progressed… too bad…
Prince creeps me out. What an odd choice for Halftime.
