Month: October 2007

  • I had an amazing worship time yesterday at Midway. One of the best in a long time.
Rehearsal also went very well in the afternoon.

Lego Star Wars is super fun–thank you to the playstation2 that someone left in the cafe. It’s fun to play!

You know what else is fun? Hanging out with Chris and Melody (and Extraordinary Desserts in San Diego–I love that place, obviously).

School, work, and work is keeping me very busy. Finding time for family and homework is tough!

    Halloween:
Love the candy, don’t like dressing up. I don’t know why, but I’ve been feeling extremely uncomfortable with the whole thing this year. I wish I could explain it, but I am not looking forward to October 31st.

Christy and I have a lot on our plate right now. She has finals and papers/presentations this week, and I’m just always crazy busy. We could use your prayers!
    Thanks!

  • On Fire

Southern California is ablaze. Check out this terrifying map of the fires that are currently destroying our counties…I also found this incredible interactive google map of all our fires, complete with updated info as to the status and location of each. (You’ll have to click on the link on the page that says “Interactive google map”…I couldn’t link it for some reason).

In addition to those fires, there are several in San Diego that are raging. Midway shut down for the week because the smoke is too thick. We have friends that live in Poway, and I just received word that another friend that lives fairly close to Midway will have to be evacuated as soon as the fire jumps the 905 freeway.

    Please pray.

I’m also reading a really interesting book by Rob Bell. I’ve recently subscribed to the Mars Hill Church podcast, and have enjoyed it (I’ve heard one message so far). Thanks to Chad for this recommendation. I think I read a good 40-50 pages this morning. Don’t look at me like that! I’m married!

  • I’m watching Anthony Hopkins on Conan. It’s hard to be funny with this man–he’s incredible. His voice is crazy deep and a little bit haunting. I guess that’s why he was a great Hannibal Lecter…

30 Rock was absolutely hilarious tonight!
The Office also had some funny moments, but I think I laughed out loud more often watching 30 Rock. I’m not saying I’m dissatisfied with The Office, but I just love Alec Baldwin on this show. His timing is so funny…

We moved offices today in the UG REG. Good times.

I’m a little hopped up on ice cream right now.

Next week I need to write 2 minutes of music showing 3 mood changes for my film music class. Yikes!

Also, I’ve been listening more to The Dailies. You should too. Go buy their album.

  • Kids, kids…

Well. You know you got a lot done in a day when one student cries in your office and another one belligerently argues with you about policy for a good thirty minutes.
    Thank goodness for Triple-Grande-Nonfat-SugarfreeVanilla-Caramel Macchiatos…

Nathaniel and I have gone on a little bit of a Star Wars craze. It all started with the PS2 that someone left in the Cafe (aka our home in San Diego on the weekends) and with me buying the Star Wars Lego game. Then I got into the game and bought a second paddle so we could both play at the same time. THEN Christy was bugging me about what we were going to be for Halloween…which lead to me being inspired to start Nathaniel on Star Wars. So I struggled…where do I start? (the question we will all have to ask ourselves when introducing Star Wars to posterity.) Do I start with the lackluster Phantom Menace? and continue on to the end in chronological order? Or do I start chronologically in earth years (by when made) with Episode IV and watch the classic trilogy before going back to the newer trilogy?
    The answer?

I did what any respectful parent of a 6 year-old would do–I let him watch Episode IV and then Episode I. Now he’s seen the start of both trilogies. He’s been exposed to the least harmful and least violent of the double-trilogy, and has a pretty loose grip on who is who. What can I say? BRILLIANT, eh?

Watching both of these movies also made me realize how juvenile and poor these two (out of the six) really are. Little Anakin Skywalker’s performance was almost as good as the robots…I mean, what a contrived performance! Geez.

Some days I have so much to do, but just not enough mental power to do it. I’ve gotta go to bed. My brain is tired, and daddy day is OVER…

  • The Dailies

I’m sitting in a super fancy board room at a regional
    Articulation meeting. No—REALLY
fancy—like the ones you see in movies. I think the House of Representatives
meets in here (when they’re in session). I have my own microphone, my own
speaker (for when others are talking), an Ethernet port directly in front of
me, and a very comfy chair. I think there are about 200 seats (or stations)
like this, and there are leather chairs in the most prominent section—which is
one huge circle around the middle of the room. There are marble walls and a lot
of fanciness. I wish I could take a picture. It’s just cool.

We didn’t realize that the Miramar air shows were on Sunday. Traffic was
horrible on the way home. We have been taking the 15 fwy home from San Diego because it
generally has much less traffic than the 5. However, due to the air shows, we
sat in traffic for an hour until we got to Poway,
and had to just get off and have dinner. We got home a little bit later, but it
    was no big deal.

A special shout out to Heidi for making the trek to SD with
us to play horn. That instrument is an amazing addition to a brass section. I’m
so used to hearing our Trumpet/Sax/Trombone/Tuba brass section that the
addition of the French Horn added a color in the section (and the orchestra
overall) that completely changed it. I can’t hardly explain it—it’s just an
amazing and highly satisfying thing for me.

This meeting is running overtime. I can feel it (much time
has passed since I wrote the first paragraph…). We’re NOT having lunch on
    time…shoot.

    Yesterday The
    Dailies
    visited Midway
    Baptist Church.
This is a group made up primarily of APU grads that I knew during my early
years at APU that were pretty close with Christy.  I think they all graduated the same year.

We were very privileged to have them at Midway. Not only am
I constantly impressed with the impeccable songwriting of front man Chad, and
really fresh sound of the group, but these are some of the smartest people I’ve
ever met. I happen to be quite addicted to the blog managed by The Dailies
keyboardist (and full-time APU music faculty) Mike Lee. Other members of the
band also blog on this site, and I am continually challenged to think deeply
about life and my faith by these super-philosophers.

Christy and I got to sing a couple of songs with them
yesterday and it was fun. Chad
and Erica (lead singers) are great vocalists—Chad sang all of the backup vocals
on High School Musical 2 (to give you an idea of how good these people are). I
have great respect for The Dailies, and it was great to see them in action
ministering to our congregation. I have been following their journey for some
time now—and knowing that you really can’t pay any higher compliment—they have
    truly made me a
    fan
. You should check out their album. It’s great—and absolutely worth the
    ten bucks.

  • Things I’m diggin right now:

-Free song of the day at Starbucks. Everyday…until November 7. My iTunes also likes this…

-Trips to San Diego every weekend. It’s not tiring or difficult. It just happens, and it’s like a vacation every weekend. Love it.

-Tuesday nights with my two sons. Christy has class every Tuesday from 4:30 to about 11PM. That means it’s Daddy’s day with the boys. Love it. Tonight we watched Star Wars. Nathaniel’s first big-boy movie. He loved it. “I want to keep watching! I want to see if Luke learns how to use his life-saber!”

-Responsibility. Even though it can be stressful, I feel like it is a constant challenge, and that drives and energizes me.

-My co-workers. What a great bunch of hard-working individuals! Love working with them.

-String players in my church orchestra. More and more are coming out of the woodwork (including Christy…ask her about it).

    -Our lawyer.

-Being the tooth fairy for the first time tonight.

    -Film scoring class.

-Superpoke on Facebook. Come on people–Facebook is way cooler than myspace and is exploding right now.

  • Sing Us A Song, You’re the Piano Guy

First off, let me say a big SORRY for inviting you all to my Thursday night gig. It turns out that the restaurant was closed to the public that night because there were two dinner parties that had reserved the place. We didn’t find out until after we arrived and saw a sign posted. We frantically called Melody (who was on her way with Shantelle) to inform her of this bad news. Sorry if anyone else came and wasn’t allowed in!

Well–it was a great gig. The crowd was totally rambunctious, which is good for me because that means people are listening a lot less closely than if I were just giving a concert…
Not only were they loud and involved in great conversation with each other, but they were also singing along a lot of the time. A few times they dragged Uncle Steve up to the microphone and coaxed him into singing a couple of Neil Diamond songs with me (he did a strikingly spot-on impression), and the groom-to-be got up and sang some songs as well. It turns out he is a lead singer in this rock band, from LA. He sang Piano Man, and Unchained Melody (and nailed the super-dooper high note in that song, which was actually too high for me even though on other songs I was singing high Cs for extended periods of time). It was a really fun time. As you saw from my previous entry, they had some specific requests, and I had to learn most of the songs since I had never heard them before. It was difficult to learn 30 songs in a couple of weeks, but a great growing experience.

A few highlights from the evening:
    1) Someone’s mom or grandma trying to convince me that Neil Diamond was the one that made “Piano Man” famous even though I had the book that showed Billy Joel wrote it…”Yes, but Neil Diamond is the one that made it a big hit. I have the album“. She exclaimed. No you don’t ma’am, because I just read the ENTIRE Neil Diamond discography and he never recorded Piano Man. (Not that I ever doubted it was made famous by Billy Joel. I mean, if you only knew one Billy Joel song–it would be Piano Man, right?) I only responded a couple of times in my defense of my Billy, because people that stubborn just can’t be reasoned with.

    2) People requesting songs left and right! “Do you know Moondancer?”, “Do you know this song?” or “Do you know that song?”. Yikes! I really felt bad not knowing most of the songs the extended family members kept requesting…however, I did bring my two Billy Joel books that contain his entire collection of songs (up to River of Dreams). Which leads me into the next highlight…

    3) Sight-reading “Only the Good Die Young” and “Uptown Girl” while several women sang along. It was only bad because on the first tune there was a really complex road map with double and triple D.S. al Codas and all kinds of weird stuff. I didn’t know what I was playing or singing…it was a mess…HA! Uptown Girl didn’t go too badly…

    4) Christy never turning the page…
So I brought Christy along to turn pages and sing a few of the girl songs (At Last, Baby Love, You Can’t Hurry Love, etc…)–which she sounded marvelous on, btw–but she was also supposed to turn pages for the rest of the songs, but she just kept forgetting! She would get distracted people-watching, and I had to keep elbowing her to turn the page…I think she paid attention about 20% of the time…silly goose.

    5) Our bet.
With the incredible diversity of song choice, with most of them from the 70′s, I was convinced that this bride was in her 40′s. Christy was convinced she was younger than that…so we made a bet.
    I lost.
Christy won a dinner in Little Italy, and claimed her prize after our gig ended (since they didn’t give us any of that delicious-smelling food at the rehearsal dinner). We were hungry. It was late.

Thanks everyone for wanting to come! We’ll try to do it again…

In other news: I still haven’t seen this week’s episode of THE OFFICE! We have no DVR down here, and we were gigging it up Thursday night. If stupid NBC was still on iTunes I would have just downloaded it and watched it, but Noooooooo…no more NBC on iTunes…GEEZ!
I was able to watch 30 Rock online, but The Office was really, really quiet on my laptop, and I couldn’t hear it. Boo.

I haven’t had this much time off in a long time. I’ve really been relaxed this past couple of days. It feels great. I have really been lounging around. I even had Nathaniel teach me how to play Lego Star Wars on the PS2 that is in our little cafe in San Diego. It’s really fun! We only have one controller though, and no memory stick. I may have to take a trip to Game Stop…

We also took a little bit of time to spruce up this cafe and make it a little more home-y. It looks great and feels very cozy. Props to my sweet wife for her cleaning and decorating skills.

I think they’re about to start a worship service next door (we have adjoining walls)…I’m out!

  • snorgtees.com and singing

My favorite Gen-Y t-shirt website is doing a contest and giving away free tees! Super fun!
    snorgTees

The contest is measured by votes received–so you have to go vote! You have to click on the little custom module that I just installed directly at the top of my page. Go vote now!

In other news–I’m singing and playing piano at La Scala restaurant this Thursday night from 5:45 to 8PM. I’ve been hired as entertainment for a wedding rehearsal dinner, and it’s all 60′s and 70′s music. It’s at a restaurant, which will still be open to the public, so if you’re not doing anything, stop by for dinner and some singing! Christy will be singing as well.
I’m also submitting an iMix, so you can just buy the songs if you don’t want to come to San Diego.
