  • The Greatest Compliment

Tonight we had dinner with some new friends at their apartment in Studio City (down the street from where Jennifer Love Hewitt and Andy Garcia live, among other famous people).  This is a guy I met in class this quarter and his wife and new kid. I totally connected with this guy in class because he was pretty outspoken, not afraid to ask questions, seemed really down to earth, and laughed a lot/was funny. We had a fantastic time. We brought Nathaniel & Noah with us so they could hang out and play with their little girl, and they also had a blast. We laughed, talked, ate some great food that Dave made, and even sang a little bit.
One of the most interesting parts of the night came when we were talking at dinner about coming to school and moving up from San Diego, and so on. Someone asked where we worked in San Diego, so I told them I was a music pastor at Midway Baptist Church. Then Dave asks, “So, are you guys pretty religious?” to which we quickly respond, “No…” because we’re not…
and what an interesting conversation that followed…

Quite simply put, no–I am not religious. I love God, I love people, I have a relationship with Jesus Christ and I live for him–but I would not ever say that I am religious. Being “religious” seems to carry quite a bit of negativity with it. Religious people can be judging, unforgiving, legalistic, and hypocritical. Religious people vouch for places in authority, they try to legislate morality, they tell you what to do and not to do and where you’re going if you do or don’t do those things. Religious people are often involved in politics, and have strong views on who you should or should not vote for based on one stance or another. Religious people are often viewed as fanatics and radicals, but not in a good way–and you know what? A lot of those “religious” types screw up. Just look at what has happened the past 5 or so years in the Catholic church with altar boys, or this year with the recently ousted pastor that bought drugs and was accused of hiring a male prostitue. And how about all of those guys from further back?
But all of that aside, it was amazing to try an explain that to someone. I’m NOT religious, but I do have some religion…if that makes sense…
We talked about what some of the good parts about religion were and what some of the bad parts…we talked about the merging of families with different backgrouds…

But the best part of the night came after Christy and Dave talked me into singing one of the secular songs I wrote for the class (the one my teacher said the f-bomb after). I sang the song (only mildly uncomfortable, thank goodness I can just look at my music or the wall or something). When I finished, Mary talked a little about the song, and said something to the effect of “Everything that is good and that I like about religion–I see it in you when you are singing. There is a positive outlook and hope there…”
This song had nothing to do with Jesus or love, or really anything along those lines…

Think about that statement for a second. Go back and read it again. It is quite possibly one of the most profound and deep things anyone has every said about me or to me in a LONG time. Talk about God shining through us…even in the most unlikely of situations….

    It’s raining!

  • Water

So, how am I supposed to know that one is supposed to call the Water company to hook up water when you move into a house? Geez…

Um, so yes. We have no water right now. Evidently, it just stopped flowing on Wednesday night. I get a text message saying “we have no water–did you pay the water bill?” And I think to myself, “what water bill?”
Well, Christy called the Covina water company yesterday, but evidently our water is through the Azusa water company. So today, first thing, she calls the Azusa water co. and they are closed Friday through Sunday. OK, so she calls the “after hours emergency line” and they tell her that we are on some water black-list thing. What?!? Evidently, they can’t turn our water back on over the phone because we’ve been illegally using water…they had the house listed as vacant and then saw a spike in the water usage without anyone calling to take over the billing, so they turned it off. Great. Thank you, Azusa water co. for being closed three days over the weekend and not being willing to turn back on our water over the phone. I guess now we’re bona-fide criminals.

Christy hasn’t showered in several days…fortunately for me, I can shower at the gym. However, it is quite hilarious that Nathaniel asks for water before going to bed and I have to tell him, “Sorry honey, we’re all out of water right now…” I don’t think his little brain can understand that…and frankly, neither can mine…

On a different note, I also got a parking ticket for parking on the street outside our house. I guess there is no overnight parking in Covina, unless you have a permit. ARGH!

ATTENTION LANDLORDS! Inform your tenants of things like “you need to turn on the water” or “there is no parking overnight on the street” or other major things like that!!!

And thank you to both the city of Azusa AND Covina…what a special week this has been…

oh yeah, anyone have some extra water?

  • School is out!

I’m done with an entire year of school. Wow.
I feel very blessed to be in school and learning. I AM learning–and I’m flourishing, not just surviving. I truly am thriving in this environment and loving it. I had another succesful song last night for my final, it wasn’t perfect–but it was still a success AND I have a great understanding of songwriting now.
It was actually interesting to see the progress of all the students in the class. Our first projects were pretty dismal, and to be able to submit a final song that was not a complete embarrassment is quite the progress.
All that to say, I love this program.

And on that note, I will be taking a little bit of time off of school to write this huge review for a school in Irvine. I’ve already completed some work on it, and am working with a really incredible director. I’m excited to be able to write music that I’ll be able to conduct–additionally, I’ll be directing rehearsals and stuff like that, so I’m stoked. Plus, I’ll enroll at CSULA and I’ll get independent study (units) for all of this work. I already talked with my prof about it.

This new Sarah McLachlan Christmas album is great.

Christy’s birthday is on Monday. She’ll be thirty-(cough). Oops, I must have missed that second number…

Now that I’m done with school, though-I great weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. School is hard! Now I’ll be able to get some sleep (not an inordinate amount, just a healthy amount) and focus on my other jobs without falling asleep at my desk…

Oh yes, and happy birthday to me, I got this now…I haven’t had any time to watch it–but I’m SO excited to-maybe over the break…

  • I got a lot accomplished yesterday. Thanks for your prayers and thoughts! I finished both projects that were due today (one on Friday and one last night) and now I just have to worry about writing my final song for my commercial songwriting class and studying for my final…plus the rest of the work stuff…but right now those two things are on the front burner.

I think tonight I may take a little time and take the kids to the Apple Store in Brea. I need to take in my laptop to get looked at (it’s running pretty slow, and still under warranty) and the Apple Store always a fun trip for everyone! There is a kids station where Nathaniel and Noah check out the latest computer games (Dora, Nemo, etc…) and I get to drool at the rest of the stuff…

Oh yeah, don’t forget that Heroes is on tonight.
Man, I don’t think I watched any TV this weekend. Not one stitch…too busy.

My song is going a little slow. Darn those lyrics! They’re so hard to write!

  • Result

    Sorry, I know it’s been a long time…

We got the really important clause taken out of the settlement (effectively giving our rights back to us) but they in turn aren’t going to reimburse all of the lawyer’s fees. So instead of getting all of our money back (OK, it was never our money) we’re only getting part of it back.

I wish I could write more, but I’m in the middle of seventeen-thousand projects and the busiest season of all! Next week is finals at school and so I’m trying to study and write my final project amidst several other pending due dates for side projects and a million concerts this weekend that we went to/are going to.

I know you’re sad this blog entry isn’t longer, but in the mean time, go over to my myspace page and watch/listen to the Captain Picard Song–it’s very cool! You may have to scroll down a little to find it…
