Month: August 2004

  • We moved this past weekend into our new place. Great house-I’m very tired…don’t have internet access until Sept 1st (or telephone). Our Telephone # will stay the same, but won’t be connected to our new place until the 1st…love you all…going to take a nap and relax some more….

Midway Praise Choir did a great job today–I kept cueing Carleene on all the ladies parts, but she sings tenor! OOPS! It was very funny…Tenors/Basses outsang the women. It was FABULOUS! We’ve never had a united men’s sound quite like that…Great job men…really great job men…(attn. ladies–the men were GREAT!) *clears throat*
    “Seek First the Kingdom…”

Star Wars DVDs come out in like 3 weeks…yaaaaaaahoo!

  • O Lord, You’re beautiful
    You’re face is all I seek…
    -Keith Green

  • Last night’s choir practice was really incredible. I feel like it was about 20 times better than the week before…maybe we should always practice in Rose’s chapel…

We read Epehsians 3:14-21 (NLT) last night for our devotions. I was prompted to do that because Chuck read it at the Next Level last week and I thought of the song “All Glory be to God” that I sang with our University Choir and Orchestra in college. THEN today I pulled out my small group book, which gives us scriptures to read daily that go along with our weekly study, and this scripture was today’s reading! Cool. I didn’t even know that…it is such a powerful scripture…here it is if you haven’t read it…

14When I think of the wisdom and scope of God’s plan, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, 15the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. 16I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will give you mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit. 17And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts as you trust in him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love. 18And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love really is. 19May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it. Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
20Now glory be to God! By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope. 21May he be given glory in the church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever through endless ages. Amen.

    Hasta- and thank you Lord

  • Memory verse this week: James 3:13
“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.”

Wisdom = a lot of things. A good study from last night’s small group…

I am really looking forward to 40 days of Community–and I think it starts up the 2nd week of OCT. So look for it-it’s coming!

God has really blessed us this past week as we are getting ready to move to our new place. In order to move in, we need a deposit of the normal rent X 2. That equals about $3400.00 WOW! And we won’t get our deposit BACK from this place until we’re moved out and everything is clean, etc…so we were praying about how we were going to come up with this $ and God just started providing…quite amazing. We had a spectacular garage sale–sold a ton of stuff and made more $ than I thought we ever would. THen we sold about 5 or 6 things on eBay that brought in a LOAD of $–we had no idea those few little things would be worth that much…THen someone at church handed us a HUGE check, and just blew our socks off! I really have spent the last few days in awe of God’s tremendous blessings! I would never had imagined anything like what HE did…Thank you Lord…

    c ya

  • Today we’re having a garage sale. I beat Mike at Nertz last night AGAIN. Shantelle B. played, but I don’t know how much she liked it…we’ll see. Moving out of our place by Sept 1st. Keeping same phone # (yay). I’m a little tired today…must have been all that Nertzing…Chris and Erica hate Nertz now…I think I may be getting a little Nertzed out, too. Or maybe I’m just tired…

  • John 13:1-17 is the time when Jesus washes his disciples’ feet. What an amazing picture of servanthood. I have read this story several times, seen it in movies and plays, etc…but something connected today. I have actually had my feet washed before at various retreats, or somilar places. The experience depended on the condition of my heart…one of the most powerful and mind-blowing experiences I had was at a worship retreat we had at our last church. There were only about 12 or 14 people there. We spent a lot of time in prayer, song, and doing activities like foot-washing…I wasn’t very outwardly expressive about how much I liked it at the time, but whenever I reflect on it now, it is one of the more unique and personal encounters with God that I have ever had. Thanks, Michael-you’re cool.

I am excited about the Midway Praise Choir! I think maybe people are still wrapping up their summers, but I have some cool stuff planned, and I feel like we are even more on-target with our vision than ever before. Yahoo! We are singing “Be Still and Know” this Sunday.

Christy and I are moving out! (Mama, if that’s moving up, then I’m….moving out!) Our landlords are selling out place, so we need to hit the road! We found a nice little place only a couple of miles from here, and we are trying to raise $ for the security deposit and such so we can move in. You should check out my auctions on ebay…I’m selling a big lot of DVD’s here.

Once you bid on the DVD’s, check out my other auctions (there’s a link for See Seller’s Other Items on the page near the top). We put a couple of other things on there…watch out Star Trek fans! And check back for more…

  • I can’t tell you how good God is. That verse I was talking about (James 1:5-6)

“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.”
    (NIV)

This is so true! I have to say that God really does grant wisdom to those who ask-he did for me. I was just thinking about the fact that I can really say that God worked a miracle in my life with the wisdom he granted me. Praise him for answering prayer! Just wanted to share that…

    Joshua 1:6-9
6″Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. 7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

I like the part about not letting the Bible leave our mouths. Interesting thought…I guess we’ve all heard the addage “Garbage in, garbage out”. OK, maybe that was just my mom…but it is really true. You can fill your mind with trash or you can fill it with the inspired words of God. Hmmm….I guess that means less TV for me…

Why does no one comment on my blog anymore? Are the entries so long that by the time you’re done reading, you don’t have time to say Hi…

    Tell them Hi for me…hehehehehehhee

Shantelle B is cool. She came over and watched “The Amazing Race” last night. I think she’s hooked…we’ll see. She’s also coming over to play NERTZ Friday night. YAY! One more person to beat down with my magnificent Nertz prowess…Good luck Shantelle…

Colin and Christie are a good team most of the time…I think that egg eating thing looked easy…and Colin was SUCH a WIMP! Man…

  • We started a great small-group study last night–it’s a PD study on the 2nd half of James (a follow-up to the last study we did, of the 1st-half…). Incredible stuff.

Last night we talked about managing our mouths (taming the tongue). I found it hilarious that Rick Warren said that he was going to name this week’s study “Don’t let your tongue lick you”. That’s soooo funny…

    Here’s today’s verse:

    Colossians 3:15-17
15Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Some words that really jump out to me today: “giving thanks”, “and be thankful”, “teach…with all wisdom”, “with gratitude in your hearts”, “called to peace”.

    I am not thankful enough.

I recall the verse in the beginning of James that says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he should believe and not doubt…” (James 1:5-6a)
I teach all the time, to our choir, to individuals in my church; I teach my son. I need wisdom…and I need to ask everyday…

I’ve been thinking about grace lately…not only how much I have received from God, but how much I should give to others…obviously, I can never out-give God, or even come close…pray for me!

  • You really should subscribe to John Fischer’s daily devotional. It’s really great– here’s a sample…

A Samaritan woman came to the well of Jacob as she always did, with an empty jar. As always, she would draw water, fill her jar full and carry it on her head back to the village of Sychar. When it was empty, she would return and do it all over again.

But this time would be different. This time she would meet Jesus, the Jewish Messiah, and He would make her a strange offer. He would offer to give her water such that she would never thirst again, because His water would be like a perpetual spring welling up within her unto eternal life.

Sometimes I think we are like that woman, hauling our empty worship jars to church so we can get filled up for another week. We come to church expecting a worship experience that is to our liking. In some cases we have chosen our church for this. We rely on the church to provide the music and the setting that will satisfy our thirsty souls that have become dry and parched from being so long in a godless world.

But it is pointless to go through this futile routine when none of it is necessary. We have, in us, the same perpetual spring Jesus was offering the woman, welling up unto eternal life. We received it by faith when we believed. With it, we can worship God wherever we are, whenever we want. We don’t need music in order to worship; we don’t need a church service in order to worship; we don’t need a worship leader to lead us in worship. We don’t have to wait for church in order to worship.

The church has gotten so good at worship these days; it’s easy to think we can’t worship without it. Worship has turned into something that we go to. We go to a place where worship happens. We come to rely on certain elements being in place before worship can take place. Doesn’t this sound a little like the woman coming to the well to fill up her empty jar?

Harold Best has said that we don’t go to church to worship; we go to church because we are worshipers. That would mean we were worshiping already. We worship when we bring God pleasure and we can do that at work, at play, in the car, at the beach, doing the chores. We can drink from the well of Christ’s presence inside our hearts and bring significance to anything we are doing.

Practice drawing on the well inside you today. Worship God today by focusing on Him in the middle of everything else. And when you go to church this week, go as a worshiper, carrying the joy of a satisfied soul right into the presence of God and other believers. And don’t wait for worship to happen to you; make it happen. You’ve got the well inside you. Drink up..

    —————————

This stuff is excellent. I hate the terminology of coming to church to get your “weekly fix”. As if the church was a gas station and IT is what we need to get “refilled”

  • Wowsers! What a day!

Went to Sea World and had a good time watching the whales splash everyone…good show Shamu!

Had our first rehearsal for A Summer’s Night w/Al Clifft and had a blast. I love to sing for that guy-his heart comes through so loud and clear above everything else–I think that’s what I love about him. Not only is he a fantastic musician and choir director, he has a heart that is amazing. He speaks truth in a way that is so open and freeing. What a great guy! I am looking forward to Saturday…all day rehearsing and then the concert.

THEN Jerry Seinfeld was absolutely phenomenal. We saw him do live stand-up at the civic center downtown. I must say, I think he is truly the funniest person alive. I have never laughed so much! But of course! It’s SEINFELD! Talk about a guy who has influenced a generation. I’m telling you-that audience was 95% late-20′s to early-30-year-old couples on dates. ALL fans of the series, no doubt. But that’s the age. We were all watching the show growing up…and I can’t believe he’s 50!
I dare not try to re-tell any of his jokes. It would be futile. But this is funny–we all gave him a standing ovation at the end (of course) and he came back out to do a time of Q & A. One guy asked when he would do another show-and he said “We all know each other, here, so I’m going to be honest with you all…I’m old, I’m rich, and I’m tired.” Thunderous applause and laughter. If you can see this show, GO!
